“Let’s go home, Colin. When I wake up tomorrow, I want a full rundown of those posts, and the history of the people refusing to listen to the two of you about leaving. We need to form a plan, but I need sleep first.”
Colin looked up at her from the corner of his eyes. “Okay. Do you want me to sleep somewhere else tonight?”
His question tore right through the center of her chest. “No.” She huffed. “I don’t know why you felt you had to lie to me, and I hate that you did, but I know firsthand how challenging politics can be. You can only ever do what you think is best in that moment.”
He took a few deliberate steps closer. “That’s true. But I’m sorry. I really am.”
She turned back toward their home, standing by Colin’s side. He kept space between them and once again crammed his hands in his pockets. Wordlessly, she stepped closer to him and slipped her hand in the crook of his arm.
His shoulders instantly perked up. After a few steps, he placed his other hand on top of hers. He deftly guided her back to their home. It may only be theirs for this night, but she was grateful to have it.
She couldn’t stay angry at Colin as she knew he wasn’t the villain of their story. For the second time, Colin had lost the future he envisioned for them and she had fallen for their lies.
This must end.
Someone had to make the State pay. She didn’t know how. She didn’t know if it was possible, but she knew their chances of surviving would be stronger together.
