She had not told him about this part, but Nele knew exactly what his wife meant. He stood beside her, and looked down at her as she had looked down at him. “Are you sure?” he murmured. She nodded.
He turned to the table. “I shall now show you the treasure that stole my fancy that night at Hobberly Castle. You will see the place between my lovely wife’s thighs, to which she has just been referring, but that is not the treasure I mean.” He reached down, and to little gasps and cries from Esther, Amelia, and even Maggie, he began to raise Susan’s skirts.
“Once you have looked upon Susan’s bareness, I beg of you, ladies and gentlemen, to turn your eyes to her exquisite face. As I bend her over the table, in a moment, to be the first lady here to receive her punishment and to pay her backside’s final price for her wanton conduct—for she has said that she enjoyed those delights of her antiquarian keeper, has she not, and Lady Lourcy and I agreed that very first night that she must suffer the consequences for that sort of illicit pleasure—I beg you to see in her eyes what I saw: my priceless jewel of a girl who could endure what society called her ruin without truly falling at all, and could tell her tale so well that I had no choice but to bring her halfway around the world so that I might make her my unlikely bride.”
