In fact, as I stare at the man leaning near the woman shopping the sex magic self, I think the whole world has stopped.

“Oh,” he says, leaning over to take the book from the woman’s hand before replacing it with another selection. “Try this one. Trust me.”

He winks at her before walking away and I’m just waiting to hear the sound of her neck snapping with how far she has turned her head to follow his departure.

“Hello, Bella.” Jedrek smiles at the blonde teen flashing her his white teeth and blue eyes. “Seems you’ve made yourself right at home.”

“I do what I can,” Bella tells him, either not hearing the sarcasm or skipping over it. When she blushes, I know she didn’t hear it. “It’s way more fun than serving bread sticks all day.”

“Way, right?” Jedrek smiles wider, mocking her teen enthusiasm.

Bella nods enthusiastically, once again missing the sarcasm.

We both watch him walk away to cruise the aisles as if taking note or inventory of his shopping lists.

“Why are you here?” I ask him, trying to not sound optimistic or insulted with his sudden arrival.

  “Rude,” he returns.

“Can I talk to you upstairs?” I ask him, motioning to the reading loft GiGi had built to hold meetings, and as a way to justify buying more books ‘for the customers’ she had said.

“Fancy,” he says, lifting his eyebrows mockingly.

We don’t engage in any more verbal banter as we climb the circular, metal staircase. Not because there isn’t plenty to say, but because I don’t trust myself to say the things I want to say around so many people. As it is, they will strain, fighting to hear every syllable traded between he and I.

“It’s okay, guys. I’ll just hold it down, down here,” Bella shouts.

“You’re killing it, kid!” Jedrek leans over the railing to tell her, showing her an air high-five for her troubles.

The sound of her laugher floating to where I am standing, waiting for him to stop showboating, does nothing for my temper.

Jedrek shrugs, looking confused as to my mood.

I return the gesture with more hostility. “Why are you here?”

“Maybe I missed my littlest witch?”

I say nothing, waiting for the real reason.

“Maybe because dead people are being found with their chests torn out and a rumor of zombie infestation a few towns over?”

I sigh, “And they want me to fix it?”

“Well, fix is a big word. Investigate fits better.”

“Fine. I’ll call Roman and have him meet me after we close.”

“Yeah, about that, I get to ride shot-gun on this one.”

“Why?” I ask, hating the way my heart skips and my stomach starts to flutter. “You’ve been happy to let Roman and I handle everything since you disappeared.”

“Rude, again,” he says with a mock pout. “I’ve been busy. As high on the chain of importance as you are, you’re not the top.”

“Whatever,” I tell him waving away his excuse and an aching feeling in my chest. “Why the change?”

“Because, my littlest witch, werewolves and vampires don’t mix.”

  “You just said zombies.”

The smile he now wears is the smile of trouble. It’s the smile right before panties are removed, drinks are poured, and bad decisions, in general, are made.

“Who do you think makes zombies?”

  About the Author

Marie F Crow weaves her stories around the human element of the horror verses the ‘monsters’ themselves. She believes that the real horror of life does not come from the expected, but from the unexpected responses of the human nature and what depths of trauma a person must survive in certain situations. She began writing The Risen Series when feeling that the popular genre was slipping too deep into the realm of pure ‘slasher’ and forgetting what the horror of zombies can mean for a story.

Now, with her children's series launched, Marie hopes to use her favorite ‘monster’ as a teaching tool to inspire children to understand that not everything that looks scary, is scary. With Abigail and Her Pet Zombie series, Marie hopes to further spread her love for all things "that go bump in the night" with small children showing them that it's okay to be different and to embrace those same differences in those around them.
