Witch I May, Witch I Might

“Ah,” she crooned, “I see your little Typic brain has caught on to everything. Good, good. It took you long enough. It makes everything so much easier when I don’t have to sit here and talk talk talk talk talk. If there’s one thing I hate it’s when you get to the end of the story and one of the characters has to just drone on and on and on about what happened. I’m always like, yes, I know what happened thank you very much. Get to the good part.”

Now she leaned in so close that her cheek nearly touched his, and her eyes burned through his own. “Well. Here comes the good part, Lucian Knight.”

He felt a bead of sweat trickling down the back of his neck as he tried again, in vain, to move any part of himself.

Belladonna stood up with a wicked smile. “Now, I may not be able to set foot in Shadow Lake without those Kilorian sisters knowing about it and swooping down on me like a pack of vultures, but you know what?” She crumpled the warrant form up in her fist, into a tight little ball. “We’re not in Shadow Lake, are we?”

Lucian strained against the magic holding him in place. His fingers twitched to hold his gun and shoot this woman to protect himself, and Addie, and all of her family because now he understood how evil she really was. Looking into her beautiful eyes like this, he knew that Addie hadn’t exaggerated her concern over Belladonna Nightshade in the least. In fact, she might not have done her justice.

In her hand, the paper caught fire. Blue and orange flames peeked out through her fingers, dancing along her skin. When they stopped, she turned her palm over, and black ash fell across Lucian’s desk.

There was a hard edge to her voice when Belladonna spoke next. “You and I will be seeing a lot of each other from now on. Consider me your new best friend. For now,” she said, reaching over and laying the tip of one finger against his forehead, “you should sleep, too. I’ve got other irons in the fire that need tending to.”

Lucian’s eyes popped open when he heard himself snoring. His head snapped up from his desk. He didn’t remember falling asleep.

Rubbing the heel of his hand into his eye, he yawned, and stretched, and reminded himself that he had far too much work to do to close his eyes for even a minute. It was late, and the judge was expecting August Lynch sometime in the next two hours. If he didn’t get this done, then they might have to wait until tomorrow morning before they could get him arraigned. If that happened his chief would have his head. That guy was kind of a bear.

Thankfully, the paperwork to charge August Lynch with murder and a host of other crimes was almost done, and this was the only thing on his plate right now.

  Just this, and nothing else.

He also wanted to get this done because it was keeping him from seeing Addie. She and her sisters were celebrating the release of her nephew from jail, and her sister Willow being off the wanted list. In his mind, this was a good ending to a bad situation. Autumn Lynch’s murderer was going to jail and everyone else got to celebrate being alive.

Having Addie in his life might have complicated things, to be sure, but she was so worth it. Who said witches were bad? Addie and her sisters were protectors of the innocent, and punishers of the bad guys, same as he was.

To be fair, he never had met a bad witch. He wondered what he would do if that ever happened?

Whistling a song to himself, he finished up everything, one page at a time, wondering why he felt like there was something he’d forgotten.

In a little while his cellphone rang. The caller ID told him it was Addie and he reached over across the files and sheets of papers eagerly to grab it.

A red spark jumped from his finger to the phone.

Ouch, he thought to himself, rubbing the tingles away on the front of his shirt. Static electricity. Hopefully he hadn’t fried the phone.

It was working just fine, and her voice when he answered set his heart pounding. “Hey, Addie. I love you. Don’t worry, I’ll be done here soon. Meet you at Stonecrest?”

  S. J. Wells

  S. Joseph Wells is a native of Northern New York, where his gift for writing was born and raised not far from the Canadian border. He spent several years there working in law enforcement before returning to his true passion…writing.

It seems his imagination has always run on a short leash, bringing him to places where fantasy and reality mix, places where the most interesting characters live and love and play and tell him their stories with a cheeky grin or a malevolent smirk.

When he isn’t completely losing track of time while walking down the twisted pathways of plotline and prose he is hanging out with his family, nurturing the imaginations of his three sons and repeating every Canadian joke he hears to his very patient and very beautiful wife (who happens to be from Canada).
