Secrets and Specters

  Lady left the room and headed out front. Conners was indeed outside. He sat on the curb. His legs were a little too long to sit there comfortably. They bunched up awkwardly against his chest.

  “Hey.” Lady went to take a seat beside him. “You okay?”

  Conners glanced up. He managed a smile. It seemed weak but genuine. “Yeah. I am. Thanks for all the help, by the way.”

  “Don’t mention it.” Lady wrapped her arms around her own knees. “Well, hopefully Beatrice has moved on for good. At least you don’t have to go talk to the family now, huh?”

  “I was just thinking about that actually. I think I might go to see them anyway.”

  “Huh?”

  “Someone has to tell them what happened with Chet,” Conners reasoned with a sigh and a shrug. “I figure it should be me. I’ll bring one of my guys along, so someone else can pass on the news in case they want me to leave. I figure it’s time I tried reaching out again, though. Maybe enough time has passed that they’ll let me help out. Financially or for closure or whatever they need. I promised Beatrice I’d try, after all.”

  Lady nudged Conners with her elbow and flashed him a smile. “You’re a good guy, Conners.”

  “I’m not so sure about that, but thanks.” He nudged her back. “You’re not so bad yourself.”
