Just as Elly was about to enter her front door, large strong and muscly arms gave her a bear hug. She looked back and grinned at Alex.
“I didn’t expect you for another half an hour.”
Alex gave a deep smile. “The traffic cleared. I’ve missed you.” He nuzzled his head against hers.
“I have something I want to show you.”
Elly chuckled. “So do I. Something to show you, that is.”
Hand in hand they climbed the stairs.
“Can I go first?”
Alex had already unpacked from his leather satchel three rolled up parchment papers.
“I think I have found the perfect home for us. Take a look at this.”
He swiped his phone and showed Elly a photo of a beautiful old manor that was framed by purple wisteria and pink rose bushes.
“Oh, it’s just lovely. But where is it? How big is it?”
Elly’s barrage of questions prompted a grin from Alex before he planted a quick kiss on her lips.
“Here are the floor plans.” He unrolled the first parchment; it was an old floor plan that showed generous large rooms and balconies.
“The company we just took over over-invested in a development project that cannot go ahead as it involved demolishing a heritage listed house. Wisteria manor. Of course, a heritage listed building can’t just be razed. As soon as I visited it this morning, I knew I needed to see more. Helen has arranged for us to walk through it tomorrow.”
“Oh Alex. It’s gorgeous. I can’t wait to explore it.” She was quite genuine in that. The photo was stunning, and the idea of a heritage house being saved resonated with her. Besides, she could tell from the floor plans that the land was generous too. Just perfect for kids.
She smiled up at Alex as she toyed with his collar.
“I have some news for you too.” Her hand slid down into her shoulder bag and she retrieved some tissue wrapped sticks, which she handed over to him.
Alex looked confused as he held them, until he unwrapped the first stick. He noticed the bright pink cross on the end and looked over to Elly.
“Does this mean what I think it means?”
“Do you mean that Wisteria Manor needs to accommodate a swing and a slide, and maybe a tree hut? It certainly does.”
Alex let out a whoop of happiness and lifted Elly up in his arms, as he swung her around with him.
“Elly, have I told you today how much I love you? Because if I have, I might possibly love you even more right now. You don’t know how much I love the idea of us having a family.”
As Alex held her close again, all Elly could think of was how perfect her life was. She and the man that she loved had found their own home for their family. Right at this point in her life, nothing was better than that.
The End.
About the Author
Meg MacRose writes her books from a room at the bottom of her garden.
Meg can often be found talking out loud to herself as she discovers her characters and writes her books.
Sometimes when the doors are open, the Australian native birds gather to listen.
Well, actually, that last sentence may not be completely true!
Here are some real facts about Meg:
Lucky enough to be living in a quintessential Australian coastal town, Meg lives with her husband and three young children amongst an enviable garden filled with Australian wildlife.
Meg knew at the age of 12 that she wanted to write steamy contemporary books that had happy endings. She would steal her older sister’s worn-out well read romance books, and using a torch would earnestly read them after lights out. Each book read would take on its own life for many days later as Meg reconstructed and modified the plot, mentally rewriting multiple endings.
