“You can have it, I will take the closet,” he called.
I smiled and shut the bathroom door behind me. I went over to my bag with clothes in it that I had put on the long bathroom counter last night after my shower. I chose some light blue jeans and a long sleeve button up black shirt, then I put a head band on to hold my fringe back. As I looked into the mirror I was pleased with my appearance, I looked happy and I felt like the luckiest person in the world.
Sam gave me a ride on his back downstairs and through the living room where I made a quick stop. I jumped on James and gave him a hug, then said Good morning, while Sam came over and punched James arm playfully. Sam had to pry me away from James and my footy conversation and into the kitchen where Summer and Jane were cooking, Peter was at the table with Hunter and Fredric leaning over his shoulders, looking at the paper, and Elane was sitting at the table reading an old book.
I let go of Sams hand and walked over to Elane with Sam following behind me. I stood behind her and suddenly wrapped my arms around her neck.
“Lays, what are you doing?” she asked in a shocked tone, putting her book down on the table.
She had her hands on my arms but she didnt try to pull back or push me away.
“Thanking you,” I said, kissing her cheek.
“And for what?” she asked, shaking her blonde and black head.
“Sam, why don't you tell her,” I mused.
I let go of her and Sam walked over with a big grin on his face. He grabbed her out of her seat easily and hugged her to him.
“Thank you Elane, for doing what you did for Layla and I,” he said, kissing his sisters cheeks.
She wiped her hands down the sides of her face where Sam had kissed her with a playful look of disgust on her face.
“No problem, but can you put me down now?” she asked, trying to squirm out of his hold.
Her feet were off the ground and he had her tightly in his grasp so there was no way she could get out of his bear hug.
“Nope, not until I'm done,” he said slyly, hugging her closer.
“Summer, Sams suffocating me with love,” she whined playfully with a smile.
“Okay, now I'm done,” Sam said, putting her back down.
“Thank you, oh and youre welcome. I told you, you would thank me for this,” she said, sitting back down and picking her book up.
“You were right, as usual, and I should have never doubted you,” Sam said, coming over to me and pulling us over to sit down across from Elane.
“I know,” she said, not looking up from her book.
I smiled and Jane placed two plates in front of Sam and I, kissing the top of my head.
“What about me?” Sam asked playfully.
I looked at Jane and she rolled her eyes but came back over to kiss Sams head.
“There, happy?” she asked while walking away.
“Very,” he answered, picking up his fork and knife.
Sam was still a teenager like me, I knew he was much more older than me but not really, once a teenager always a teenager, even if they dont always act like it.
“James,” Summer called.
James flashed into the room and took his plate off Summer, then he kissed her cheek and everyone in the room said aw.
“Yeah, yeah,” James said, sitting down at the table next to Fredric.
After a few minutes of eating, Jane and Hunter called us to attention.
“Ah, guys this is hard to say but um…” Jane trailed off, she sort of looked embarrassed.
“I've asked Jane to marry me, and she agreed,” Hunter finished. Jane showed us the small silver ring on her second last finger of her left hand.
That didn't really shock everyone in the room, we had kind of all expected it lately, but we all applauded and whistled in congratulations.
“When is the wedding?” Elane asked with a smile.
“Ah, we have not really gotten that far. We were hoping Summer would help us,” Jane said, looking at her mother pleadingly.
“Of course, you are my daughter,” Summer said.
“Congratulations guys,” I said warmly, when they sat back down.
“Yeah, congrats,” James said, thumping Hunter on the back.
“Thanks,” Hunter said.
“Yeah... so can I be the flower girl?” Elane asked intensely.
“Yes Elane, you can be the flower girl,” Jane said. “And Layla, we would like you to be my bridesmaid,” Jane asked me while drinking some juice.
I smiled at Sam and then back at Hunter and Jane. “Yeah, sure. It would be my pleasure,” I said happily.
I had never actually been to a wedding before, let alone been a bridesmaid.
“That's a very beautiful ring, where ever did you get it Hunter?” Summer asked curiously.
“It was my mothers engagement ring. When our parents died their belongings were split between us. Fredric has her wedding ring and I have her engagement ring,” Hunter said.
“Oh, that's lovely,” Summer said curtly.
“Yeah, and I would, if you guys don't mind, but I want Sam to be my best man,” Hunter said.
“Ah, are you sure? I mean what about Fredric?” Sam said in confusion.
“Fredric will always be my brother but I want you to be my best man, you helped me through a lot,” Hunter said, looking at Sam eagerly.
“Sure,” Sam said with a nod.
“Good, and thanks,” Hunter said with a smile.
“Well, I guess this means we have a lot of work to do,” Summer said, getting up from the table. “Come along Jane,” Summer called, walking over to Jane and taking her arm.
“Okay, I will see you soon,” Jane said to Hunter, kissing him on the lips sweetly then leaving the room.
“I think I'm full,” I said with a burp and covering my mouth. “Pardon me,” I said, getting up.
Sam got up with me and we scraped our remainders of food in the bin, then put our plates in the dishwasher. I took Sams hand and we walked out the backdoor and into the early afternoon sun. We walked through the forest slowly, enjoying the suns rays. Today was a beautiful day, winter must be passing, finally.
“It's good that Jane and Hunter are getting married ay?” I asked, looking up at the sky through the trees.
“It is. Jane finally has someone permanent. I couldnt take another 100yrs of her horrid boyfriends,” he said in a mock of horror.
I smiled. “Jane had boyfriends before?”
“Uh huh, every one of them was… well I can't even find a disgracing enough word they were that horrible,” he said, pretending a chill ran down his spine.
“What about Elane and James?” I asked curiously, ducking under a branch.
“Not really, they would go on dates but never bring anyone home like Jane would.”
“Oh,” I said, surprised.
We had reached our peak now and were walking through the narrow trail that opened to reveal the river below and the trees surrounding it.
“Elanes ability is amazing,” I said, admiring the Elane-made forest as I put it.
“I know, I'm thankful she is my sister, even if we do fight,” Sam said from next to me.
I looked over at him and he looked gorgeous in the sun, his hair was honey red and his skin was faintly illuminating.
“Is something the matter?” he asked, noticing my silence.
“There's something I don't get,” I said, sitting down on the edge of the peak.
“And what is that?” he asked, sitting down next to me in the damp grass.
“Everyone I know that is a Supernatural being looks different from normal people, but why do I look like a normal human?”
He took my hand in his and waited for me to look at him. “Believe me Layla, you don't look like a normal human at all, you are a millions times more beautiful than any of them. I have seen a lot of young women in my day and none of them could amount to the attraction I hold for you. How many times do I have to reassure you of that?” he reassured me, ki
ssing my hand.
He pulled back and his fingers lightly traced over his ring on my finger. After all this time I still had not taken it off and doubted I ever would.
“What are you thinking?” I asked curiously, watching him trace his ring over and over.
“I am thinking I will always love you. I would sacrifice my life for yours any day, even though that is something only an idiot would do,” he finally said.
I shifted closer to him and he wrapped his arms around me.
“You don't have to though. Were okay now, right?” I asked into his chest.
“You are safe for now, we all are. For how long I am not one hundred per cent sure, but you will always be safe with me, I will protect you with my life this time. The last time was a once off, it will never happen again.”
“I know,” I whispered, grasping him tighter.
“I swear to you, it won't.”
No matter how messed up the situations can get, I wouldn't change this life for anything in the world because I truly belonged here.
