A SEAL’s Resolve

“We won’t call anyone,” he said. “Not until you decide you want us to. Take a deep breath. One thing at a time. Can you tell us what happened?”
What happened?
What happened was this was supposed to be a routine trip. A visit to some clients. A courtesy. A way of showing that Altavista Imaging cared for the people who used its satellite imaging technology. A chance to find out if there were concerns. Things the company could do better. Eve had made these trips before, although never alone. Usually as a secondary. She was head of quality control and spent most of her time supervising operations. She enjoyed these little jaunts away from company headquarters in Virginia.
Used to enjoy them.
If she made it back to Virginia, she’d never leave again.
“I saw—” Was it safe to even say it out loud? “I saw someone… do something.”
Anders nodded. “How many men?”
Eve flashed back to the gas station, even as she wondered how he knew to ask the question.
Military training, she realized. He’d have been in plenty of difficult situations. Must be used to analyzing them and gathering facts.
In her mind she saw the three men who’d climbed out of a blue truck to confront a fourth as he’d exited the gas station. She saw him knocked to the ground. The men’s flailing legs. The dull thuds of their boots against the man’s flesh. Their animal grunts as they kept at their deadly game.
The one who’d turned her way.
“Three,” she managed to say.
“What happened?” Anders pressed.
“They came after me.”
She couldn’t remember them speaking a word. It was as if they’d communicated with each other telepathically. They’d moved as one, leaving the man on the ground, chasing her.
Catching her.
The pipe coming down.
“I passed out. I woke up in the back of their truck. They were driving fast.”
“On the highway?”
She shrugged. “I guess.”
“How’d you get away?” Curtis asked.
“Jumped.”
Someone swore.
“I ran.”
“They didn’t see you?”
She shrugged again. “There was an off ramp. I took it. Stayed in the woods as long as I could, followed the road. Got back onto it when I couldn’t make it through the brush anymore.”
“Where’s your coat. Your gloves?” Anders asked.
“I… took them off in my car before I stopped at the station. Had the heat on high. Just ran in to get a soda.” She hadn’t bothered to suit up for the cold weather again.
“Where’s your purse?” That was Avery. A woman would think of that.
Her purse.
Horror bloomed in Eve’s chest. She looked up, met Anders’ gaze. Saw her own understanding reflected there.
“They have it.”
