Death With Dignity

“To Jim, it does. He’s a stickler for what he considers justice.”

“As far as I’m concerned, justice was served,” Henry said.

“His concept of justice had Norman Bledsoe falsely accused of his wife’s murder too.” Sam sputtered in disgust.

“That’s another thing.” Matthews dipped his head. “That whole situation has Jim flipping out too. The so-called friend, Nora, agreed to wear a wire when she went to visit Stacy in her hospital room. We have the daughter on tape talking about killing her mother.”

“Some friend she turned out to be,” Sam said with a snort.

“Seems she wanted to save her own ass more than she cared about the friendship. Hence, Jim agreed to let me take your statements while he started on the ton of paperwork involved in that case.” Matthews moved to the table and pulled out his cell phone. “Who wants to go first?”

Sam lifted her eyebrows. “Don’t we need a legal pad and pencils? That’s how they do it on TV.”

“In this case, I’ll use my phone to record your statements and have them transcribed later.” Matthews pulled the desk chair close to the table. “Unless, of course, you want to get a pencil.”

Sam shook her head and started talking. She told of their arrival in Portland and all the subsequent events. Matthews asked a few questions and Henry filled in any missing details. In thirty minutes, they were done. This time Sam held nothing back. Let Munroe chew that for a while. She didn’t need the straight-laced detective poking into her affairs any longer or accusing her of lying.

Matthews seemed satisfied with their explanations. He pocketed his phone and stood. “I’ll get this transcribed and you can sign it. You’ll be in Portland for a few more days.” It was a statement, not a question.

“We have another of my father’s victims to contact. We’ll be around for a while,” Sam said.

Matthews paused on his way to the door. He stared at Sam with genuine curiosity. “Why are you doing it?”

Sam pondered her answer. She’d never really considered the question before. When her mother first told her about her con artist father, Sam was embarrassed. When her fiancé chose her father over her, she was hurt. But when she began to compile a few of the victims’ stories for the trial, she became angry. She somehow felt tainted by her father’s sins. That was when she became determined to find his money and return it to the rightful owners.

But how could she explain it to Matthews? She lifted her shoulders and dropped them. “Why not?”

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

You may wonder why EB Corbin is the pen name for Edana Corbin. Read on for the not so spellbinding (?!) story…

I once read that you need an easy to remember author’s name. My first name “Edana” is not only difficult to remember, it’s difficult to spell and almost impossible to pronounce correctly without instructions (say Ee-donna). It often gets confused with Edna which causes me to cringe—not that there’s anything wrong with Edna, it’s just NOT my name.

So when kicking around a name to use on my first published novel, I came up with EB Corbin. The E for my first name and the B for Bob, my husband whose given me tremendous input from page one. I specifically left off the periods after the initials so as not to be confused with E.B. White — I neither write for The New Yorker nor about spiders. And I most definitely do not pretend to be an expert on the Elements of Style.

Anyway, that’s the tale of how EB Corbin came to be. I hope enjoyed this book and if you get a chance, please try the Roxanne Boudreaux trilogy, which is currently available on Amazon both for Kindle and in paperback.

Thanks so much for reading about Sam and Henry. I’d love to hear from you. You can leave a review on Amazon or contact me on my website (you can also sign up for my mailing list) at www.ebcorbinauthor.com I promise I won’t spam you or inundate you with emails. I will let you know when the next book in this series is available and perhaps talk a little about my life since I moved to Ecuador.
