“Interdimensional travel may not make us as godlike as you’re thinking. The multiverse is vast, and my research has given me good reason to think the quantum engine only gives us access to a tiny corner of it, as colossal as that corner may be. We have no idea what the entire vastness could contain.”

Husher’s lips tightened, though he knew Ochrim was right. “We don’t even know what our own universe contains.”

“Precisely. But I see your point. There may never be a noble reason to exercise the ability to influence another dimension’s history. I will cease my research.”

“Good,” Husher said, relieved that Ochrim agreed. Unfortunately, he knew that someone would likely stumble on the tech someday, and even if they didn’t, the galaxy still faced a host of other problems. The Quatro had broken away from negotiations to join the IU soon after the Battle for Home. Rocked by the revelation that their Eldest had been replaced by a fraud, they’d retreated into the systems they’d been given. No one had heard from them since.

Then there was the issue of how to humanely deal with the billions of civilians still alive in the Progenitor dimension—as well as the millions of Ixan clones the allies had taken prisoner.

The Gok still had their problems, and the general tension surrounding interspecies relations certainly hadn’t resolved itself overnight. There was still plenty of room for the Interstellar Union to regress into the tyranny and madness that had seized it in recent years.

And even if that didn’t happen, there was this new matter of the hundreds of AIs scattered throughout the multiverse, burgeoning inside their own universal fiefdoms, committing who knew what unholy acts.

It’s never been so vital to protect the things that keep us sane. With that thought, Husher’s gaze settled on Fesky’s feathered back, ranging far ahead along the cobbled path. At the same moment, he thought of his daughter, Iris, and his ex-wife, Sera.

And he resolved to do better. Just as he so often had.
