But he loved another and that’s just the way things were.
“Just tell me one thing,” I said, staring out across the city. “Are you happy?”
“Scarlett—”
“Are you?”
His eyes flashed silver and he turned away. “I’m a work in progress.”
Knowing that was the best answer I was going to get out of him, I grunted and turned back to the haze that’d fallen over central London. It was a sheen of smog, or the stink of human progress as I liked to call it.
“The future is unwritten,” I said, quoting the druidess.
“That’s a comforting notion.”
I pushed to my feet and dusted off my arse. “Well, I think we should start writing ours, don’t you?”
He looked up at me with a raised eyebrow. “You want to rush into battle right now?”
“No,” I said with a laugh, “don’t be so dramatic. I was thinking about starting with lunch. I hear it’s Frittata Friday.”
