The hooded figures fell back, the chanting ceased and the King retreated into his cabin at a fierce pace.
Before I could think about how to fight back next, arms closed around me and I was lifted off of the ground.
A shriek left my lips as I twisted in my captor’s grip but he only tightened his hold, hoisting me up until I was pressed against his chest and his arm was hooked beneath my legs.
“Gabriel?” I breathed, blinking several times to see if his face was going to change or not.
“I’ve got you,” he replied, his tone dark as we swept higher, leaving the cult behind and bursting through the canopy until we were heading straight for the moon which hung low and fat in the sky.
Gabriel beat his wings powerfully and we sped away over the woods, gaining height with each passing second.
The wind whipped around me and it felt like I was breathing clean air for the first time all night.
My pounding heart finally started to slow and the shaking in my fingers eased off.
Maybe I was going to survive this after all.
I leaned closer to Gabriel, stealing strength from the warmth of his arms around me and the fierce expression on his face.
I reached up to touch his cheek, a shiver running through me as his gaze shifted to meet mine.
“You rescued me,” I breathed.
Gabriel frowned like he was going to disagree but he released a growl instead.
“They were going to kill you,” he said grimly. “I saw it through the stars. And for a moment I thought I was going to be too late. I wanted to rip them all apart but every way that played out ended in your death. Your only chance was to get you away from them.”
I shook my head, unable to get a grasp on what had happened.
I drew closer to Gabriel, tightening my hold on him as I laid my ear against his chest and listened to the steady thrum of his heart, willing mine to match the pace of his.
My memories were a tangled web of confusion and fog, but some things stood out and I wasn’t going to forget them.
I’d seen the King tonight and he’d seen me too. I just had to try and figure out which face belonged to him. Or if any of them had.
And more than that; someone had gone to great lengths to get me in front of him.
I didn’t know if it meant they’d figured out my connection to Gareth, or if I’d just asked one too many questions and drawn too much attention to myself.
But it didn’t matter.
Because now I knew I was getting close.
I’d looked into the Devil’s eyes and lived to tell the tale. I wouldn’t be caught out the next time. And there would be a next time. Because I was closing in on the answers I sought. And I wouldn’t stop digging until I unveiled them and their guilty blood was spilled.
