  ‘You said that Miss Gurney could not swear to having seen you steal the component because you had stolen it from quite a different shop.’

  Russell was on his feet, and his voice made some silverware rattle on the mantelpiece. ‘I never said any such thing.’

  ‘I heard you,’ Keith said. ‘Distinctly.’

  ‘Munro?’

  Munro’s grin was savage, showing his long teeth. He cupped his hand behind his ear. ‘Pardon?’ he said.

  ‘Sauce for the pigeon,’ Mr Enterkin repeated.

  When Russell had stormed out, spitting threats which they all knew were empty, Keith said, ‘I’ll never slander that feather-brained bladder of lard again.’

  ‘May I borrow your phone?’ Mr Enterkin asked. ‘I had better phone the good lady. She has no great love for you, but she is intensely loyal to her employer, and no doubt her loyalty will extend to the man who proved her boss innocent.’

  Keith was only half listening. Now that another crisis seemed to be averted, his mind was already moving on. He was wondering what action to take against Bob Jack at Haizert, action which would incorporate a suitable measure of revenge. Keith hated to owe a grudge.
