“Yes, you are. We are impatient tonight, aren’t we? Okay, here goes. Once upon a time in a land of the Nez Perce there lived an amazing wolf named Kiya who didn’t have any family.”

“What happened to her mom and dad?” Sierra asked.

“Her mom and dad went off to get food one day and got separated from their baby.”

  “Aww,” Sierra moaned.

“But it’s okay because by this time Kiya was able to hunt by herself, take care of herself. So every day she went out to forage for food in the forest. One day, near a village, Kiya came upon a little girl named Sierra—”

  “Like me.”

Skye touched her daughter’s nose. “Exactly like you. And because Kiya had a good heart, she recognized the baby girl was hungry. Kiya gathered fruits and nuts and berries to feed the little girl. Soon, after eating her fill, Sierra said she was full. From that point on, they were inseparable—the two—the wolf and the girl. Together, they grew strong and took care of each other. They became a pack, a unit. They were joined together as a family forever, nothing could ever pull them apart.”

“Not even when bad guys see them?”

“Not even. You put bad guys out of your head. You let your old mom and dad take care of the bad guys. That means that the spirit within you is strong. That spirit is Kiya. It’s what makes Sierra a warrior.”

  “Like you and Daddy.”

“Exactly like me and Daddy.” Skye laid her hand over Sierra’s smaller one. Josh put his on top of both.

“What Mom’s trying to say is that we’re always stronger together as a family. Kiya sees to it that we’re stronger. We all belong to each other. Family is everything. Never forget that.”

Sierra let go of Atka and sat up, putting her arms out for a hug. “I want to belong to a baby sister. Do I get one?”

Skye traded looks with Josh and then stammered, “Uh. Um. Well. Uh...”

“I want a baby sister,” Sierra insisted.

“Tell you what, how about we talk about that later, like in the morning over breakfast, okay?”

  “’Kay.”

  “Now go to sleep.”

“Sleep tight,” Josh told his daughter, leaving a crack in the door. He took Skye’s hand and backed her down the hallway to their own room. “Sierra said she wanted a sister. I think we at least owe her our best efforts.”

She tilted her head to look into his eyes. “I suppose we should at least give it a try. After all, family is everything.”
