Book Discussion Guide
OBJECTIVE: To provide thought-provoking prompts for book clubs and reader groups in order to facilitate discussion about the ideas presented in the novel. Be advised that some of the questions in this guide contain plot points. In order to avoid being spoiled, please do not engage the discussion guide until you have finished the novel.
1. In what ways does the title Of Things Unseen connect to the themes presented in the novel?
2. Black women are expected to be strong. How did this expectation manifest throughout the novel? In what ways did the various black female characters show strength? In what ways did they allow themselves to be vulnerable?
3. Discuss Tamara and Tony’s marriage.
4. Chapter 30 is narrated from the killer’s point of view. Discuss his thoughts/observations about women, race, and masculinity.
5. Is there any truth to Tamara’s opinion that black girls are reluctant to talk about their fears? Where did that reluctance play out in the novel?
6. African Americans are often reluctant to discuss class differences within the community. To what extent does class/socioeconomic status influence the characters and events in the novel?
7. Discuss the evolution of Barrington’s character, particularly as it relates to his views on 1) race and 2) black womanhood.
8. The title directly refers to the missing black women in the story. Who else might the title be referring to? Why?
9. Discuss the dinner conversation between Fallon and Barrington. Which side do you take, and why?
10. Do you agree with Tamara’s opinion about infidelity? Why or why not?
11. How much responsibility do Tamara and her friends have for what happened to Leah?
12. How much do you think Mr. Reggie knew about Tony? If he knew something, why do you think he didn’t say anything?
13. Compare and contrast Nikki the Northerner and Tamara the Southern Belle. To what extent, if any, do you think region accounts for their differing views?
14. Discuss the idea of Atlanta as the “Black Mecca.” In what ways does the author pull back the curtain on the city?
15. Discuss “Impostor Syndrome.” How did various characters in the novel navigate their feelings about their own self-worth?
16. Dr. Thomas was brutally honest with Tamara about her health, and by extension, the health of black women as a group. Do his words ring true? How have you seen it play out in your own life/the lives of black women around you?
17. Do you agree with Dr. Gold’s assessment of Andre? Why or why not?
18. Discuss the relationship between Tamara and Barrington, particularly as it relates to infidelity.
19. Was Tony a good husband? Why or why not?
20. To what extent does Tamara’s relationship (or lack thereof) with her father influence her relationships with men?
21. Picture Tamara’s life one year from the end of the novel. What do you see?
