  “Private? Ha! That’s Sergeant Major Schmuckatelli to you, thank you. Get it right.” He wrapped his arms around Todd and squeezed. I could see moisture in his eyes as he muttered, “And you should be thanking me, ass face. You have a bad knee.”

  “So?”

  “So, you don’t need to be getting on your knees. You might not get back up.” He stepped back and wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. “Welcome to the family, by the way. I can’t imagine anyone else I’d rather have as a brother.”

  Todd wiped his eyes, too. His voice gruff, he shot back, “How about we don’t put the cart before the horse. She hasn’t said yes, yet.”

  “She will.”

  “You don’t know that. Stubborn streaks seem to run in your family.” Smiling sweetly, he approached me. “What do you say? Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”

  I nodded, laughing. “I will.”

  He whooped and swept me up like I was as light as a feather, mounted the steps, and carried me into our new home, despite my protests…

  And we lived happily ever after.
