Break The Line

I look over at Jess, and he practically pushes me out into the aisle. I walk cautiously up the stairs of the stage, and across the floor to Benson, who is smiling mischievously.

“What are you doing?” I whisper to him, as he pulls me into a hug.

“Breathe,” he says against my earlobe.

“Danni-Rose, you are one of the most maddening human beings on this planet. You’re stubborn, strong-willed . . . passionate, fierce, and immeasurably beautiful. You’re the catch of a life time.” I watch with tears in my eyes as Benson bends down on one knee, his hand reaching into his back pocket. “I will love you for the rest of my life, if you’ll let me. Baby, will you marry me?” he asks, hands wrapped around a black box with a pear-shaped diamond ring in the center.

“Yes, oh my God. Yes!” I say, and without a second of hesitation he slides the water-drop shaped ring on my finger. He pulls my face to his, kissing me and smiling between our lips.

“I have a surprise for you,” he says, my fingers grazing against the scruff along his jawline, completely forgetting the audience.

“There’s more?” My eyes widen, unsure if anything could make this moment any better than it already is. Benson’s eyes are focused on something just over my shoulder, and curiosity causes me to follow his gaze. My mama, daddy, Liza and Beau all tumble up the stairs, smiles on their faces. I turn to Benson, “When did you…” I trail off just as Beau reaches the two of us, full of sprint, circling our legs and jumping excitedly while we struggle to pet him and rub his fur.

“Oh, my baby girl, come here,” Mama says, pulling me into a hug. I look to my side and my daddy is shaking Benson’s hand.

“Let me see that rock!” Liza jerks my hand over to her and lets out a whistle.

It’s in this moment that my heart is utterly full; the people on this stage giving me more happiness than I could have ever dreamed of having. I look over to my fiancé, staring into my eyes, and I’m so thankful that he didn’t let go. That he held the line, refusing to let it break.
