Author’s notes
Okay, so I’ll hold my hands up, I have no clue where I’m going with this journey. I do have a sequel almost finished and still none the wiser, but that’s what makes this little project a bit more exciting, yet scary. So basically the characters, the readers, and even the creator has no clue how this tale is going to go.
This little book is around 52,000 words long, and I have put this out to test the water, so to speak. If people like this story and want more, then the good news is that the second book is next and will be a 90,000-word novel.
A few things have been left hanging in the balance with the first book. I am personally not a big fan of cliffhangers (when it comes to TV or books) but found it increasingly difficult to tie up loose ends in just 50,000 words. If I did that then the book would feel rushed.
Obviously, at the beginning and near the end, we briefly meet Henry Brown. Henry will be one of the main characters in the second book, and I will be expanding on this character as well as Henry’s partner Maxwell.
I made Henry into a drug dealer and there was a reason behind this. Apart from being a hitman or a soldier, there was no realistic way I could introduce civilians with handguns into the book, especially with our UK laws, so Henry and Maxwell, who are violent drug dealers and will heavily feature in the next book, will be bringing a different element to it.
Will we meet the local psycho Luke Bentley? Not sure yet. (By the way, Luke Bentley was a kid in my school who took a dislike to me. One PE lesson he ran after me with a hockey stick. It’s funny how these incidents at school never leave your head, even when you’re a man, like me, in his forties. I’ve even used his real name).
The other things that need to be explained or expanded on are the red Xs on some doors of people’s houses. Who’s doing it? And why? And what is this dark secret of Paul’s? To be honest, I don’t know myself. I haven’t worked it out yet. Hopefully, the next 90,000 words of this tale will shed some light on some of these queries, but there will be definitely be a third book coming out to wrap everything up, and the series will continue further if the response is positive.
Until next time,
G.G.
