“Are you going to be staying with us?” Eloise asked, bright and inquisitive. Beside someone so like the girl she used to be, it was amazing to see the difference that a year made for the girl.
“Maybe.” Mary’s eyes darted to Jane and Adelaide. “If-If you’ll have me.”
“I’m sure we can find a space for you,” Jane said. “For as long as you want it, you’re welcome here.”
A smile spread across Mary’s face.
“Oh!” Eloise clung to Jane’s arm. “Can I show her your garden, Jane? It’s the most impressive one.”
Jane smiled down at her, patting her head fondly. Rosemary was perhaps the most maternal of the bunch, but Jane certainly felt more than a touch of that instinct for the teen. “Of course. Adelaide?”
“Far be it for me to be inhospitable,” Adelaide said, raising a wry eyebrow at Eloise. Eloise giggled—after so many months, their first meeting had become almost an inside joke between the two of them.
Eloise held out her hand for Mary to take rather than grabbing her as easily as she did Jane, clearly working not to startle her. “Come on, Mary. You’ll love the flowers!”
Jane watched the two girls climb over the fence, Eloise already explaining how the magic worked. Mary looked spellbound, maybe by Eloise’s words or maybe by the rosy flush of her cheeks and lips, highlighted by the setting sun.
“The sunset is beautiful here,” Jane murmured softly, leaning back into Adelaide’s arms. She knew that Adelaide would know that she was talking about far more than the sunset.
Adelaide’s arms came around her waist. “It is, isn’t it, Jane?”
Together, with their community, with their family, they watched as the sun dipped from the sky.
