Glossary of Terms
2IC - Second-in-command. A title denoting the second-highest authority within a certain group, team, or organization.
AI – Artificial Intelligence. The simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions. The term may also be applied to any machine that exhibits traits associated with a human mind such as learning and problem-solving.
AO – Area of Operations. Area defined by the force commander for land, air, space, and naval forces conduct of combat and non-combat activities.
APC – Armored Personnel Carrier. An armored military vehicle designed to transport personnel and equipment in combat zones. Compared to other infantry fighting vehicles, APCs generally have less armament and are not designed to provide direct fire support in battle.*

Canked – Military term for ‘cancelled.’
CEO – Chief Executive Officer, as of a corporation
Civvies – Civilian clothing
EAS – Acronym: End of Active Service. Conclusion of the period of active duty commitment for a member of the United Nations military.
EOD – Acronym: Explosive Ordnance Disposal. A military role involving specialized training. Explosive Ordnance Disposal techs are specially trained, equipped, and integrated to attack, defeat and exploit unexploded ordnance, improvised explosive devices, and weapons of mass destruction.
Fast Movers – Military term for fighter/attack craft
Fatal Funnel - entryways where one can be easily seen, but which are difficult to move out of in the case of incoming fire.
Forward Space Controller – Military specialists who operate on remote, often hostile, planets. Acting as attachments to UN special forces teams, these highly specialized troops are trained in a wide range of tactical skills, as well as being certified air, space, and suborbital traffic controllers. They utilize their skills to establish air and space control, and to provide combat support on missions throughout the known worlds.
Grabnach – Kedreod word. Roughly translates to “the fecal matter of a wild animal.”
Green Beanie – slang term for Army Special Forces. Given for their distinctive headgear, the Green Beret.
ISR – Acronym: Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance. Refers to functions and principal elements of United Nations defense capabilities, and includes a wide variety of systems for acquiring and processing information required by Earth security decision makers and military commanders.
KIA – Acronym: Killed In Action
Libo – Short for ‘Liberty.’ An authorized absence, not chargeable as leave, for short periods to provide respite from the working environment of for other reasons.
MARSOC – Marine Corps Special Operations Command. The Marine Corps component of United Nations Special Operations Command. Its core capabilities are direct action, special reconnaissance and interstellar internal defense. MARSOC has also been directed to conduct counter-terrorism and information operations.
NOC – Acronym: Non Official Cover. Operatives under non-official cover (NOC) are operatives who assume covert roles in organizations without official ties to the planetary government for which they work.
OpFor – An opposing military force. Also sometimes used to refer to friendly or allied military units tasked with representing an enemy during training exercises or war game scenarios.
Oscar Mike – Acronym (military phonetic alphabet): On the Move.
PMC – Acronym: Private Military Contractor. A PMC is a soldier who will fight for any group, country, or company who hires them. PMC’s are not subject to the military laws of the United Nations or the Planetary Accords. PMC’s are also commonly referred to as ‘mercenaries.’
POA – Acronym: Plan of Attack
Pos – Pronounced ‘poz.’ Short for ‘position,’ as on a map.
POS - Acronym: Piece Of Shit
Prone position - The prone position is the position of a sho
oter lying face down on the ground. It is considered the easiest and most accurate position as the ground provides extra stability.
QRF – Acronym: Quick Reaction Force. an armed military unit capable of rapidly responding to developing situations, typically to assist allied units in need of such assistance.
ROE – Acronym: Rules of Engagement. The internal rules or directives among military forces (including individuals) that define the circumstances, conditions, degree, and manner in which the use of force, or actions which might be construed as force, may be applied.
S-2 – refers to “Staff Function Two,” or a unit’s Intelligence and Security shop.
SCASS – Pronounced ‘ess-kaz.’ Acronym: Suborbital Close Air and Space Support.
Special Activities Division (SAD) - The Special Activities Division (SAD) is a division of the United Nations Intelligence Agency responsible for covert and paramilitary operations. The Special Activities Division’s duties include but are not limited to any and all high-threat clandestine and covert operations. SAD often selects former service members from various branches of the U.N. special operations community (such as Delta, the 13th French Parachute Dragoon Regiment, Indian Navy Special Forces, Navy SEALs, The Royal Thai Army, Polish GROM, and the United Kingdom’s Special Air Service).
Scuttlebutt – Rumor; gossip
Second Stick – Military term for copilot
SOB Holster – “Small of Back” holster, effective for concealed carry.
SpacePAC Widow – A spouse who screws around on their deployed significant other; named for the Space Planetary Alliance Coordinated exercises, or ‘SpacePAC,’ during which members of the military are often deployed for several Earth months.
Sporh-gack - Shemari swear word. This roughly translates as any number of profanities in Earth Standard English, and can vary dependent upon the speaker’s situation, tone, and severity of voice inflection.
Stockade – military’s equivalent to jail. “Stockade” is the term used by the Army and Air & Space Force. “Brig” is used by Navy and Marine forces (Brig is, incidentally, the correct term
