“I’ll definitely miss everyone here.”

“You are a remarkable man,” she says, squeezing my arm. “I can’t wait until we meet again someday, so you can tell me about all the fantastic things you’ve accomplished.”
“I look forward to that day, as well,” I tell her, hopeful it will happen. “I suspect you’ll have some interesting stories to tell me.”
I give her a chaste kiss on the cheek before walking her over to Dominus Leo.
Holding out my hand, I give the man a firm handshake. “Safe travels.”
“Thank you, Master Anderson.”
I smile and nod to them both before turning to leave, feeling no regret as I walk away.

Unexpected Complications
The week of finals, Thane comes barging into our room, shouting, “I can’t fucking believe this!”
I need to study for my Applied Calculus test, but I can see he’s incensed. So, I put down my pencil and close the book. “What’s up?”
When Thane meets my gaze, I can tell immediately that he’s spooked.
“Seriously, buddy, what’s wrong?”
“Thompson just called. My mother received her sentence today. After having her mental state evaluated, the courts found her mental health condition requires treatment.”
“Isn’t that a good thing?”
“No. The damn judge sentenced her to time served and added six months in a mental institution. That means she’ll be out in the fall.” Thane starts pacing. “They’re transporting her to a facility this week.” He looks up and yells at the heavens, “When will I ever be free of this woman?”
I grip his arm, looking him straight in the eye. “We’ve got your back. You know that. And we have six months to come up with a plan to protect you from her.”
“I don’t want to do this anymore, Anderson. I’m done.” The look of defeat on his face guts me.
“Don’t let her get into your head. This is finals week. You’re about to cross the finish line! Remember when you told me you planned to graduate a year early? I didn’t believe you then, but you are right on track. Just one more year after this week.” I slap him on the back, trying to cheer him up. “You’re almost there. Can’t you taste it?”
The only response I get is a forced smile.
“So, sit your butt down at your desk, forget everything else, and study,” I say, guiding him to his chair.
He sits but continues to stare at me, looking dejected. In a monotone voice, he says, “What does it even matter?”
“It matters because you are a man of your word. You promised yourself you would do it, and you need to honor that promise.”
Thane chuckles sadly. “That’s an interesting way to put it.”
“Do right by yourself. Don’t you dare think of giving up now.”
Thane’s expression changes, and I hear him growl under his breath. “Yeah, I can just imagine her laughter if she hears I failed this semester and quit.”
I like seeing his fighting spirit reappear. “That’s right, buddy. No way are you giving the Beast that kind of satisfaction.”
“No, I won’t.”
Encouraged by his change of attitude, I take a textbook from his backpack and place it on his desk. “So, do what you need to do and stick it to your bitch of a mother.”
I watch with satisfaction as he slips on his earphones, gets his notes out, and opens the book.
No man left behind…
I’ve decided that’s my new motto as I sit down at my own desk and dive back into my studies.
Five days later, I am ready to celebrate! I’ve fucking slayed all my tests and feel like a conqueror.
I invite my friends to a kegger party I’ve heard about being held off campus, but only Samantha agrees to join me.

As for Thane, he’s been lost in his own world ever since he got the news about his mother. The guy successfully made it through finals this week and is still on track, but it seems as if the wind has been taken out of his sails.
So, Samantha and I go by ourselves to enjoy some end-of-the-year partying, and we stay until the cops arrive to kick everyone out. Walking back to the campus, I find I’m pleasantly buzzed.
“I never knew you were such a party girl, Samantha. You’re really fun when you let your guard down.”
“I have many different sides to me,” she says with a playful grin. “I’m as complicated as they get.”
She stops for a moment, balancing on each foot as she takes off her heels, carrying them in one hand as she continues walking with me.
“Those things must hurt like a motherfucker. I don’t know how you do it.”
She shrugs. “I like the power they give me, so I actually don’t mind the pain.” She holds one of the shoes up threateningly, the spike pointed right at me. “Plus, they make great weapons if anyone tries to get
fresh.”
I raise my hands in surrender, chuckling. “You don’t have to worry about me.”
“I know.” She smiles. “But, I still figured I’d warn you.”
“I didn’t realize you could be so feisty.”
She laughs. “I’ve been told I get that way when I’m tipsy. You should see me when I drink tequila.”
“I’m suddenly craving Mexican. What do you say?”
She gives me a sideways glance. “I see what you’re doing there, but I’m not drinking margaritas tonight.”
I chuckle. “You just have me curious, is all—”
Samantha suddenly stops and points. “Is that Rytsar?”
I look in the direction she’s pointing but see nothing. “Where?”
“On the ground,” she cries as she starts running toward him.
I follow her and see Rytsar sprawled out on the ground next to his dorm, a smile on his face.
“Looks like someone did a little too much celebrating,” I comment as I grab his hand and help him to his feet.
Samantha drops her shoes to help support him. “We’d better get him to bed.”
We walk him into the building, which is unusually quiet for a Friday night. “Guess everyone’s still out partying.”
“Yeah,” she laughs. “We’re the only responsible ones here.”
As we wait for the elevator, Durov turns his head toward Samantha. “Well, hello, beautiful.”
“Hey, my drunken Russian.”
When the doors open, Samantha tells me, “I can take it from here.”
“You sure?”
“Absolutely,” she says, winking as the doors close.
I leave the building, laughing to myself. I’ve never seen Durov that drunk before but, based on the smile on his face, I assume he’s found his happy place.
I’m surprised I don’t see Thane when I arrive back at our dorm. I trust everything is okay, but I wish he’d joined me tonight so I wouldn’t be worrying about him now.
When it gets to be two in the morning, I head outside to search for him. After wandering around fruitlessly for a half hour, I head back in, realizing it’s pointless. I have no clue where he might have gone.
I start pacing the room to calm my rising anxiety, wondering if his mother has gotten out somehow. Who knows what the damn woman is capable of?
Finally, after three, I hear Thane fiddling with the doorknob. When the door opens, my stomach sinks. The guy looks as pale as a ghost.
I walk toward him. My blood runs cold the moment our eyes meet and I see the look of horror on his face.
“What the hell happened to you?”
“Not me. It’s Durov…”
