As she approached the door leading to the ladies’ room, the men’s door open, and her body vibrated. She was still getting used to the ability at telling the difference between a dragon shifter and other types of shifters. This one about to come through the door was a dragon.
When the man’s head appeared, her muscles froze and her heart lodged in her throat. It was Nelor. Holy crap. What was he doing there? He was a wanted man.
Her initial instinct was to duck into the bathroom and hope he hadn’t seen her, but then her dragon told her to face him. It was the only way to erase all of the bad memories—and guilt.
“Well, well, if it isn’t Lily Harper.”
She squared her shoulders. “I thought the police were looking for you.”
He stepped closer, and her dragon pushed her talons out of her fingertips. She wasn’t going to fight him. It didn’t matter that she might be able to take him. After all, she was strong. And fast.
But at the first sign of stress, she knew who would come to her rescue, and Lily wanted to show Birk that she could handle this herself.
“I did leave, but I’m back. Don’t worry about me. The cops are too stupid to catch me.” He sniffed and then sneered. “I see you mated with a dragon? Was it that sad sack Caspian?”
She refused to comment.
“I never would have thought you’d mate with him. Poor guy has to look at your scarred back for the rest of his life.”
“What are you talking about?” She loved the look of confusion on his face. Lily lifted her hair to the side and twisted partially around, keeping a close eye on him. “See?”
“Well, well. I see your dragon healed you, but you still deserved what you got.”
His bitterness cut a hole in her gut, and something snapped. “Get out of here, Nelor.”
“Say what? You’re giving me orders now? That’s a laugh.”
A door banged open, and the music and voices from the bar finally registered in her brain. Birk must have sensed what was happening because his anger surged through her.
Without warning, Nelor lunged at her, and her instincts kicked in. In one swift move, she grabbed his neck and forearm while she wrapped her right leg behind his body. Probably because he had no idea what she was capable of, Nelor didn’t fight back, or else he was just plain shocked that she wasn’t backing away.
Just as Birk rushed down the hallway behind her, along with someone else, she shoved Nelor backward, and he tumbled on his ass. The satisfaction bolstered her ego.
“Let her do this,” Thane called out. “She can handle him.”
Birk growled, but he kept his distance. Nelor rose to his feet and spit on the floor. “You aren’t worth it,” he said.
As much as she wanted to laugh and ask if he thought he was, Nelor spun around and walked past her, Birk, and Thane, heading most likely toward the door. Being bested by a woman would be worse than death for Nelor, so she let him be.
“I’m going to kill the son of a bitch,” Birk said.
Lily didn’t need any more grief over Nelor Dobbins. She’d put him in his place. Something deep in her soul told her he’d never bother her again. “You can call the cops and let them deal with that asshole.” He still needed to have a trial for what he did to her the last time.
She touched Birk’s arm, and he spun around toward her. The lines around his face softened, and waves of desire radiated off him. Her heart filled with pride.
Birk stepped closer and cupped her face. “You’re right. I have to say, seeing you toss that jerk to the ground was the best birthday present I could have ever received. You are amazing, Lily.”
She smiled and then winked at Thane. “There are more smooth moves where those came from. Maybe I can practice on you?”
“Oh, baby. I can see this birthday is going to be one of my very favorites.”
