We’re All Super
Everybody was talking about the party after that, and the thing with Zylowski. Everybody except Jared McClaren. Michael sat in the handicrafts pavilion and watched Jared work. Four different Jareds were using hand saws or sandpaper or screwdrivers. He had already put together two different collapsible camp stools today, and was admiring his handiwork before beginning the staining and finishing. Two other Jareds were working on that part of the assembly line a little ways off.
“Nice work,” Michael told him.
“Thanks,” Jared said. The other Jareds kept working while they talked. It was a little strange.
“Was it bad? At the facility? Is it cool if I ask… I mean…”
“Nah,” he said. “It was like school, only it was me and some coaches. We mostly worked on my ability. After that we started to get caught up on the schoolwork. I’m still not even ready for Marcus Patterson.”
“That’s lame.”
Jared nodded. “I’m glad my parents are on that trip though. I was getting sick of studying every day, not going out.”
“What trip?”
“Oh… they’re on a cruise thing. Fourteenth anniversary thing, this cruise down to the Caymans and South America.”
“Nice.”
“Did you get invited to the party?” Jared asked him.
It was Michael’s turn to laugh. “You gotta have an ability to go.”
