Instead of slapping my ass again, Riley’s hand curls around my hip, delving between my legs to tease my clit. “Gonna come,” they mumble, rubbing swift and strong. “Come with me?”

“Oui. Jouis en moi, mon chou. Donne-moi tout ce que t'as.” Come in me. Enjoy me. Give me everything you have…and I’ll give you everything I have.

Maybe it’s the French, or maybe they just can’t hold back any longer, but Riley digs their teeth in and pulls me down onto their shaft with the strength of desperation. Their rippling abdominal muscles clench, and their claws leave stinging pinpricks in the cheeks of my ass as they come, flooding my core with powerful pulses of warmth.

Feeling Riley come is enough to bring me with them. With each spurt of heat that spills inside me, my walls twitch greedily around Riley’s length, pleading for more. I’m undoubtedly going to feel this in the morning, but right now, I don’t care. I want to drain everything I can from this moment, because I can already tell its sweetness will sustain me for a very, very long time.

Riley keeps fucking me through our shared orgasm, barely even slowing down. Their animalistic side has gripped both of us, and it’s a while before our bodies reach anything like satisfaction. Only when they’re drenched in sweat, enough of it to make my skin sticky as well, does Riley finally release my shoulder. They groan, slumping forward to rest their forehead on the tomb.

I can relate to their exhaustion. My body feels as spread and sluggish as the Mississippi. Still, there’s enough of a tingle remaining inside my belly that I suspect we’ll pick things up once we get back to our hotel.

“This wasn’t supposed to be so hot.” Riley tries to sound sulky, but their wide grin gives them away immediately. “I was just goin’ along with it for your sake.”

“Riley Evans,” I sigh, reaching back to caress their ears, “you’re a terrible liar.”

“Am not.” Riley can’t contain their chuckles for long. They nuzzle my neck, planting butterfly kisses around the bruise they’ve left. “I’m just glad you didn’t wanna do it in the church. Then we definitely woulda been caught.”

  “Next time.”

“Nuh-uh. At least here, we won’t piss anyone off…except maybe that voodoo priestess.”

“I have a feeling Marie Laveau doesn’t care all that much.”

“Hm.” Riley pauses, thinking. They lean past my cheek, placing three kisses on the marble wall of the tomb next to my nameplate. “Three X’s,” they explain when I give them a curious look. “For a wish.”

“I don’t think she grants wishes on other people’s tombs, mon chou.”

“Fine. Then I’m askin’ the universe or whatever.”

After a while, I can’t contain my curiosity. “What did you wish for?”

Riley smiles at me. “That the two of us’ll be happy together for a real long time.”

  A long time.

Neither of us can be sure how long that will be, but it sounds like a perfect wish to me. I offer the universe my own three kisses, turning my head sideways and craning my neck to peck Riley’s cheek, chin, and lips. The last kiss deepens quickly, and I gasp as Riley adjusts our positions, causing them to stir inside me. Looks like we’ll be continuing before we get back to the hotel after all. We’ve got all night if we want it, and as many other nights as the two of us feel like sharing.

  Chapter Nine - Riley

ELYSE BANGS HER MUG of tea on the table, causing the dregs to slosh around inside. “As the host of this little gathering, I’d like to officially bring this meeting to order.”

There isn’t enough left in the cup to overflow, but a worried look crosses Li Min’s face. “Careful. I’m the one who has to wipe these tables, y’know.”

“I don’t have a gavel,” Elyse says, as if that explains everything.

Li Min raises an eyebrow. They shift their weight, folding their arms over their brown work smock. “Also, technically I’m the host? I’m the one who works here.”

“And I’m Izzy’s best friend. If our goal is to plan the perfect surprise party, I should be in charge.”

I share a look with Colin, who’s sitting to my right. He seems amused, judging from his grin. “When you told me we were meeting Elyse for coffee, you didn’t mention the free show.”

I elbow him lightly in the ribs, but it’s too late. Elyse and Li Min both glare at him.

“And what’s that supposed to mean, funny boy?” Elyse leans forward over the table, staring directly into Colin’s eyes.

He puts on his most disarming smile. “You think I’m funny? Good. Because I think you’re pretty.”

Elyse’s mouth falls open, and her eyes go wide behind her glasses. She seems lost for words, so I clear my throat. “Izzy. Surprise party. What’s the plan?”

Elyse blinks rapidly, shifting her gaze from Colin to me. “See? Riley recognizes what a valuable resource I am. And to prove my value…” She reaches into her purse and pulls out a crisply folded piece of paper, spreading it open on the table. It’s an idea web, complete with pictures printed on it. “Here are all of Izzy’s favorite things.”

Li Min bends over for a look. “Reese Witherspoon? I can get behind that.”

“Legally Blonde,” Elyse says. “It’s her favorite movie.”

“Okay,” I say, to forestall another argument. “You think we should watch that?”

A smirk spreads across Elyse’s face. “Actually, I’m envisioning a rooftop viewing. We’ve got big screens and projectors at work for PowerPoint presentations.”

“You think the super of your building would allow that?” Colin asks.

Elyse’s smirk grows wider. “My super’s an asshole, but Izzy buys her super a bottle of wine every year for his birthday. He loves her.”

“Everyone loves her,” I can’t help adding, because it’s absolutely true. Just thinking about Izzy makes my hands all tingly and sends my pulse into overdrive. We’ve been dating almost a year now, but she still makes my heart flip-flop like the first time I saw her on the subway.

  “She’s a sweetheart,” Colin says.

I elbow him again. “Hey. Don’t you be putting the moves on my girl.”

Colin leans away, offering up his best innocent look. “I’d never steal my best friend’s Georgia Peach. Besides, there are plenty of other pretty ladies in New York.”

“Yeah,” Li Min chuckles. “And you’ve slept with half of them.”

Colin shrugs. “I can’t help it. Selkies like getting wet.”

He and Li Min high-five while Elyse rolls her eyes.

“If the children are done speaking, one of the adults in the room has more ideas. We need snacks, so I’m going to use my donut contact—”

“You have a donut contact?” Colin says. “I didn’t think you could get more perfect.”

Elyse scowls, but a blush creeps onto her cheeks. “The point is, we’re having donuts.”

“If you have this party planned already, why do you need us?” Li Min asks.

“Because A, I need your help setting up, and B, I need to make sure you know what presents to bring.”

Colin sighs. “Set-up? So, you’re using me for my body. I see how it is, Elyse.”

“I’m inviting you because, for reasons beyond my understanding, Izzy likes you. And I’m inviting Li Min because they’re my donut connection. Plus, Riley needs someone to hang out with during my time with Izzy.”

That comment digs a little, but I get why Elyse is possessive. She and Izzy have been friends longer than Izzy and I have been lovers, plus Izzy’s ex Natasha never wanted her to have friends. Still, I have to speak my mind. “You know I respect your friendship with Izzy, but I’m her S.O. If you’re gonna block out a whole schedule for this shindig, you’d better pencil me in for a generous portion of time.”

Elyse waves me off. “Relax, Riley. You’ll get plenty of time with her.”

“Did the two of you just completely gloss over the fact that I’m the supposed donut connection for this party?”
Li Min says. “No one told me I changed careers to back-alley snack distributor. Besides, can Izzy even eat donuts if she’s a vampire?"

“She can,” I say, “although I’m sure she’d like ‘em blood-filled.”

Li Min pulls a face. “Ew. I mean, I guess I could ask the morning baker? He owes me a favor.”

“I’ll pay if you ask him,” Elyse says. “Now let’s talk presents. Li Min, the donuts will count for you. Colin, what are you getting her?”

Colin strokes his chin in thought. “You mean besides my radiant presence? I was thinking perfume. I’ve got a pretty discerning nose.”

Elyse nods her approval. “She’d love that. What about you, Riley?”

Internally, I panic. Elyse has voiced the same question I’ve been turning over in my mind for days. I get Izzy little gifts all the time, but this is her birthday. I need to go big.

“Actually, I was hopin’ for some advice on that front, if you don’t mind. I really wanna impress her.”

“You’ve come to the right girl.” Elyse whips out another piece of paper, sliding it across the table toward me. “Here’s a list of ideas.”

“You didn’t think I’d be able to come up with somethin’ on my own?”

“You just told me you haven’t,” Elyse points out. “But it’s more that. I thought you’d want to do a really good job.”

That flattens my fur a bit. Elyse can be bossy, but her heart’s in the right place. We both love Izzy to bits, albeit in different ways. “Thanks. I’ll take a look at the list later.” I give it another fold to make it smaller and tuck it in my pocket. “What time’s the party?”

“Eight in the evening, on the day of. None of this ‘we’ll celebrate on the weekend’ bullshit. Show up at Izzy’s place around six to help me set up the roof. I have her scheduled to get off work at seven thirty, and it takes her a while to get home.”

“I’ll ask for the evening off,” Li Min says. “My boss is a gremlin, so he likes doing the night shift himself anyway.”

Elyse shoots Li Min a disapproving look. “Gremlin?”

“I mean he’s literally a gremlin,” Li Min says. “I wasn’t using it as a pejorative. He self-identifies as a gremlin.”

“What about you?” Elyse asks Colin.

“I end every day at five. You can count on these…” He flexes his arms, toned but not bulky, and gives Elyse a wink, “to be at your service.”

Elyse rolls her eyes, but I catch the hint of a smile on her face. “Riley? Izzy would never forgive me if you had a scheduling conflict.”

I shrug. “I’ll be there like shareware.”

“Good wolf.” She lets out a long, loud breath. “Okay, let’s talk about the playlist.”

  ***

“You don’t have to do those, mon chou.”

I lean away from the dirty dishes in the sink, looking over my shoulder as Izzy sways into the kitchen. She’s wearing her sunglasses, and her shiny pink purse is looped over one shoulder. My heart melts faster than butter in summer. My girl is absolutely adorable.

“Well hey there, sunshine. Work go okay?”

Izzy places her purse on the counter, then takes off her sunglasses, scrunching up her face and pinching her forehead. “Fine, except Mrs. Morris still doesn’t understand the difference between right click and left click, and Mr. Patil almost fell for his third Nigerian scam today.”

“Well, he is a genie. It’s not surprising he wants to grant people’s requests.”

“You know how genie wishes work. If you wish for a room full of gold, it’ll fall right on top of you and kill you before you can spend a cent.”

“I got a feelin’ that’s how Scrooge McDuck died.”

“I pity the scammer more than Mr. Patil,” Izzy says. “But seriously, Riley, you don’t have to do my dishes for me.”

I shut off the water and set the last plate on the drying rack, wiping my hands on a nearby towel. “It don’t bother me none. Besides, I’m the one who makes most of ‘em. You usually drink from me or one of those blood bags of yours in the fridge.”

“And you’ve saved me a lot on grocery bills, so it evens out.” Izzy sidles up to me, and I pull her into my arms, bending down to steal a kiss. It’s juicy and sweet, tasting like the remnants of her lipgloss.

  “Welcome home, babygirl.”

Izzy makes a growling noise, tugging my lower lip playfully between her sharpened teeth. “I kind of like having you here to wait on me. Is that wrong?”

“Not at all.” My hands, as they so often do, find themselves wandering to Izzy’s rear. Her breath hitches as I squeeze, and she rests her head on my shoulder. “So, have you thought about what you want for your birthday?”

“You mean besides the surprise party Elyse is planning?”

“How’d you find out about that?”

Izzy stops nuzzling my neck and looks up at me. “Sometimes I forget we’ve only been dating ten months. It feels like so much longer.”

I have to agree. It’s hard for me to remember what life was like before Izzy. Usually, I don’t want to. In a short period of time, she’s become a mainstay in my life. Being around her makes me feel more at home than my actual apartment does, which is probably why I spend so much time in hers.

“Elyse does this for me every year. The theme and the activities change, but…”

“I get it. She goes all out.”

  “And I’m grateful.”

I pick up on what Izzy isn’t saying. Although my girl is super friendly to every single person she meets, she doesn’t have many friends to speak of. Part of that is the introverted nature she conceals as best she can, but it’s also thanks to Natasha, her shitty ex-girlfriend. She poached most of Izzy’s former friends during their break-up, with Elyse being the major exception.

“Will you be okay with Colin and Li Min coming this year? ‘Cuz I know Elyse invited them.”

“Of course. I like your friends.”

“They’re becoming your friends too, I hope.” It’s true that Colin and Li Min are more my friends than Izzy’s, but over the past few months, we’ve had a lot of fun spending time together. It feels like the start of our own New York City multi-species pack.

  “They are.”

Izzy inhales deeply at the crook of my shoulder, and a shudder shoots down my spine. She isn’t only thinking about Colin and Li Min and the surprise party, that’s for sure. I feel the pull of her hunger crawling along my skin, and I can’t really blame her. She just got home from a long day at work, and I know the 'juice' boxes she keeps in her office mini-fridge only go so far.

  “You hungry, sunshine?”

“Always.” Izzy runs her tongue over her teeth, fangs already extended. “Just smelling you makes me ache.”

I can relate to that. Smelling her makes me ache too, although the sensation’s more likely to live between my legs than in my belly. I untangle myself from her and sit down in one of the kitchen chairs, leaning back and patting my lap. “You c’n grab a bite if you want. I had a big lunch, so I can afford to share.”

“If you’re offering.” Izzy saunters over, rolling up her skirt a bit to straddle my thighs. My hands return to her backside while she drags her tongue along my throat, searching for a good spot. Her nostrils flare when she finds my carotid, and she latches on, not biting down, but sucking the flesh hard enough to leave a hickey.

“Hey now. Colin’s never gonna let me hear the end of it if you mark me up like a teenager.”

“You like it,” Izzy mumbles. She drapes both arms over my shoulders, and I groan as her fangs sink into my neck. It never hurts, although it leaves me feeling like I’ve been sucked into a spiraling tornado. Izzy always makes me dizzy in the most wonderful way, and I’m pretty sure it ain’t just from blood loss.

Her feeding has another side effect. The blood I still have makes the decision to pool between my legs, throbbing there with its own heartbeat. I should be used to it by now, but it takes me by surprise every time, how turned on
I get when Izzy drinks from me. The pressure leaves me whimpering. I buck without meaning to, squeezing the soft, full cheeks of her ass through her skirt.

Izzy gets the message. She removes one of her hands from my shoulder and slides it down my belly, flipping open the button of my fly and peeling down my zipper. Those magic fingers of hers have no trouble finding their way inside my pants. My boxers are already soaked, a discovery that makes Izzy moan around her mouthful of my neck. She draws harder, and pleasure-spots flash before my eyes.

All I can manage is a mumbled, “Please?”

Izzy swirls her fingers over my clit, causing me to twitch in time with the pulls of her mouth. The rhythm leaves me helpless. I spread my legs as best I can with her thighs resting on either side of mine, trying to give her more room to work, but she doesn’t need the help. She knows exactly where and how to touch me.

I scatter kisses on the side of her face, along her rounded jawline and her cool cheek. When I reach her ear, I nip the very edge, careful not to disturb the golden hoop in her lobe. “Make me come, baby? I need it.”

My begging must make Izzy happy, because she slides her middle finger inside me, curling into the spot I love most. The extra bit of pressure has me howling. I peak with heavy pulses, grinding my clit into the heel of her hand. I’m not spinning anymore, but floating, grounded only by the weight of Izzy’s body on mine.

Izzy suckles my neck for a few more seconds, but let’s go eventually, placing a gentle kiss over the bitemark she’s left. “Thanks for dinner. I didn’t drink too much, did I?”

I blink stupidly, struggling for words. It’s hard to tell how much of my wooziness is from her feeding, and how much is from my orgasm. It was a quick one, but it hit me like a Mack truck. “M’fine,” I mumble, which seems to put Izzy at ease. She pulls her hand out of my pants, licking a trail up her wrist, and I clench with aftershocks when I realize she’s gathering up what’s left of my wetness.
