  “Hmm…”

I swiped the screen and saw it was from Brooke.

“We need to talk about what happened. Second floor. Room 2212. Urgent.”

So much had happened, I forgot Brooke was there in the Junction Room when Dr. Kelsing gave me the mission. I figured I’d talk about it with her now than wait in the morning.

The halls of the dormitory were mostly empty with a few sparse cadets wandering around. I didn’t have trouble finding her room. I only had to knock on it once for the door to swing open. The brunette, still dressed in her uniform, greeted me with a subtle smirk.

“You said this was important,” I said.

She looked left and right in the hallway then tugged on my arm. “Not in the hall.”

The door clicked closed and I was able to see her dorm room. It wasn’t much different from my own. The walls were barren. The bed was made. But some of her casual clothes were scattered across the floor. Skirts and shirts. Socks and sandals. A not-so-subtle pair of lacy black panties stuck out from a small hamper where our laundry was picked up.

And then there was the smell. I sniffed into the air to make sure I got the scent right. Some kinda perfume. Or air-freshener. Whatever it was, it made being in Brooke’s room a lot more tolerable.

But any mood I assumed Brooke was in didn’t apply at the moment. She crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow at me.

  “What happened?”

I shrugged in response. “You’ll have to be a little more specific than that.”

“The reports in the Med Bay aren’t private. Two of your squadmates had to be recalled. And then you’re in Chancellor Layton’s office for a meeting right after.”

“You are following me, aren’t you?”

She sighed softly. There was some disappointment in her eyes. She was always in a good mood. So confident and friendly. I knew something was wrong from the way she looked now.

“What happened in your Junction?” I asked.

“It went fine. My squad and I went through it without any trouble. Found the Obelisk. Beat the guardian. Standard procedure. Don’t try to change the subject, Liam. This isn’t about me.”

“I don’t know what you want me to tell you.”

“Just tell me the truth. Dr. Kelsing is talking about some talking Shadow. You go to the Junction Room when it’s shut down. A meeting with Chancellor Layton… What’s up?”

It wouldn’t be long before the details got out. I knew I could trust Brooke but I hesitated for a moment. I suddenly realized I didn’t wanna worry her.

  “Liam…”

I sighed a deep breath, knowing she wouldn’t stop trying to get it out of me. “I found a Herald. A talking Shadow. It turns out, they’re the ones responsible for everything happening in Pandora.”

“A Herald… I heard the rumors. I thought they were just that. That explains why they can’t get any proper readings.”

“Campbell said my communicator recorded all of my combat data and it lines up. The Junction Room has been shut down to plan their next move.”

  “Which is?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know. The engineers are scanning the dimension to see if the campus is adequate enough to deal with the threat. Otherwise, they’ll alarm one of the other Districts. In the meantime, we all have to start preparing.”

  “For what?”

“Anything. Level. Train. Practice. We have to do everything we can to be ready.”

Brooke wasn’t that much shorter than me but she still had to look up at me. She twisted her lips like she was trying to think of what to say. The concern I saw in her eyes just a second ago was gone, which was a relief.

She kept her arms crossed and sighed as she looked away. “Go figure. The highest-ranking cadet on this campus is a Silver and we’re already dealing with a Herald.”

“It shouldn’t be that much of a problem. I mean, if they’re at the same level as the one I just fought… After all, I did beat him.”

“That’s right.” She raised an eyebrow at me, her eyes narrowed as she looked me up and down. “I had a feeling about you. Rhys always tries to single out the people he sees as a threat. He gave me a hard time back when we both first came on campus.”

“I guess we have that in common.”

  “Yes, we do.”

She took a step closer to me and I realized the flowery scent was coming from her and not her room. Her hand moved to my chest with her thumb and forefinger fiddling with the top button on my uniform.

“You’re strong,” she said. “I don’t have to look at your stats to know that.”

Her eyes narrowed. The dimly-lit dorm room wasn’t enough to stop me from noticing how amber brown they were. Her gaze distracted me from the way she undid the top button. Another button followed but still I didn’t move from my spot. Not that I had much of a choice. Brooke was the type of girl who had guys falling over themselves because of how pretty she was, even without wearing much makeup outside of some eyeliner.

  “I owe you,” she whispered.

  “You do?”

“That’s right. For telling me about everything that happened. For convincing Dr. Kelsing to let my squad go through that Junction.”

“You didn’t find anything but… You’re welcome, Brooke.”

She put her arms around my neck and pulled me close. She tugged on me hard enough so suddenly I wasn’t ready. Not that I minded. Our lips met and her tongue quickly found its way into my mouth. The sound of our messy kiss echoed through her dorm room.

My hands instinctively moved up to her body and slid over her frame, the cotton of her uniform the only thing stopping me from feeling her completely.

She pulled on my lips with hers as she moved away, her hands still unbuttoning my shirt. “That was for slugging Rhys…” Her hands moved down to my pants. She undid the top button then pulled the zipper down. I was so hard I was poking through. But Brooke let my pants fall and tugged my underwear down to free me completely. “…This is for everything else.”

She suddenly fell to her knees and took me into her mouth. Along with the shock of her giving it to me so fast, the wet warmth against my rigid flesh made my knees buckle. Both of my hands pressed on her shoulders to brace myself. She smacked her lips on me, not hesitating to take me as deep into her throat as she could.

It all happened just like that. I looked down at her to enjoy the sight. Shit… I could hardly believe it. A cute brunette bobbing her head back and forth on me. Slurping loud enough to make sure I heard it. Moans blocked off from how much she was taking me in. I’d never been with a woman like this before. Not with the same enthusiasm. Not with the same skill.

I ran my fingers through her curly locks and gently pulled her off. She stood back up to her feet to give me another messy kiss. My hands moved to her top and undid her buttons, revealing the white bra underneath. She opened her shirt off and threw it aside like it was on fire. We worked together to take her bra off. Her arms lowered, Brooke let her bra fall to the ground and reveal a pair of breasts with a tan that matched the rest of her bronze body. I’d seen her in her uniform and in her armor. Now I saw just much how she was hiding behind all of it.

I reached my hands up and cupped one of her breasts. She was big enough I couldn’t hold her all in my grip. Soft flesh spilled from beneath my fingers as I tried to squeeze all of her. My other hand did the same with the other breast.

  “I didn’t think…” I whispered into her mouth.

“You didn’t think I was so big.” She giggled as she kissed me. “The armor and uniforms do a good job of constraining me. I consider a C-cup to be a nice little surprise, don’t you?”

She pulled away to give me a devilish smirk. I took a moment to admire her figure. A slim waist led up to the breasts she was proud of. Toned arms from the Red Mana and running Junctions only made her petite frame even more appetizing.

She crossed her arms beneath her breasts and raised an eyebrow at me.
“So… Are we doing this?” Her eyes shifted down between my legs. “Because it looks like you wanna do this.”

  “I… wanna. It’s just…”

  “Something wrong?”

  “Protection?”

As soon as I said it, she put her hand up to her mouth and giggled. “The Med Bay brings people back from the brink of death. Contraception isn’t a problem. And every girl on campus uses. You’re not allowed to be a part of the Legion if something… unplanned were to happen.”

“Right… I guess that covers all the bases.”

“I’m glad to hear it.” She grabbed my length in her palm suddenly and tugged on it. “Follow me.”

I was curious as to what she was up to. We walked the short distance into her bathroom. She moved over to the sink and reached underneath her skirt. I watched her lower the white pair of lacy panties to her ankles and kicked them away. My eyes worked up her slender, golden-tanned legs toward the pink slit. A dropped leaked down the inside of her thigh and made my stomach churn with anticipation.

  “What are you waiting for—”

She gasped when I took her waist in my hands. I pressed my hips forward, using my shaft to search for her warmth. Her reflection stared back at me, biting the corner of her lip to hide the devilish grin she had.

  “Go ahead—Ahh!”

Another gasp poured out of her when I plunged into her. So warm. So tight. So wet. My eyelids flickered from everything hitting me all at once.

I squeezed my hands tight around her waist, digging my fingers into her soft flesh. My hips moved on their own. My hilt thumped against her tan cheeks, the sight of them reverberating with every thrust making me even harder. I grunted in satisfaction as the clapping of our bodies grew louder.

  “That’s it… Give it to me, Liam… Do it…”

  “You like that?”

“Yeah, I like it… You like it… Banging a Silver Omega… Bet you never thought you would get this high—Ungh!”

She gasped again, her mouth hanging open when I thrust into her hard to cut her off. Whimpers, sighs, and giggles all fought with one another as they tried to escape her throat.

Her hands pressed down over the sink to hold her up while I relentlessly took her. A desire like an animal consumed me. My focus couldn’t be broken.

My eyes locked on our reflection. Her narrowed gaze. Panting for breath. Big, tan breasts heaving in rhythm with my thrusts. Skirt flailing. Her round, firm ass reverberating as my hilt slammed into her. Another moment of disbelief came across me.

  “Harder…” she grunted.

I gritted my teeth and followed her instructions, pounding her furiously.

  “Harder!”

My hand roamed up into her hair. I squeezed a handful of her curly-brown locks hard enough to make her head tilt back. Another gasp was followed by another giggle.

  “Harder! Do it!”

The friendly cadet was gone, replaced by a girl who wanted nothing more than for me to satisfy her.

But I couldn’t keep up. Even with all the endurance in the world, my body was giving in. Every ounce of pleasure was building up inside of me like a dam overflowing.

  “Brooke…”

“Do it… Give it to me… With me…” Her mouth opened wider. Her face was a twisted combination of ecstasy and agony.

Suddenly, her body shook beneath me. She squeezed around my length.

There was no fighting it. The strongest man couldn’t resist. One last thrust and I grunted to let her know I was finished.

My body shook hard as the first line of seed spilled out of me. Thick throbs made my knees buckle. I dug my feet into the ground and gripped her waist, making sure I was as deep in her as I could be. I gave her everything I had while she trembled against me.

I fell on top of her right after. I just now realized how much both of us were sweating, our wet skin pressed against each other. The bathroom fell silent except for our heavy breathing.

She giggled again and stared at me through the mirror.

“Not bad for a bronze, eh?” I said with a wink.

She winked back. “Not bad for a bronze… How about another round?”

  “I…” I was completely exhausted but I couldn’t refuse.

  “…First time I ever hooked-up with a lower rank…”

  “Any regrets?”

She raised an eyebrow at me and shook her head.

Brooke stood naked in front of me as she finished buttoning my shirt. She straightened my collar then smudged her thumb across my lips.

“You’ve got a little lipstick,” she said.

  “Just a little, huh?”

“A little.” She gave me a smirk.

I’d lost track of time before Brooke was eventually satisfied. The lust in her eyes was gone, replaced with the less obvious desire I was more used to. She took a seat on the edge of her bed as she put her underwear back on.

“Listen, Liam… Everybody here at the Academy is on edge. We’re all fighting for humanity. I mean, when they say we’re the last line between existence and extinction, it’s a big deal. The officials know that more than anybody. So they encourage this sort of… fraternization. There’s no better way to relieve tension.”

  “Can’t argue with that.”

“Back when I was in the real world… When I was just a regular civilian, I was some girl who was still trying to figure herself out. A lot of people teased me for being ‘friendly.’ I’ll admit, sometimes I got a little too friendly, especially with boys.”

I chuckled softly. “I get what you’re saying.”

“Out here though, I really am just trying to do something. I wanna make something of myself. Tonight was just…”

I took a seat on the bed next to her. “If this is your way of telling me it was just sex, you don’t have to keep beating around it. We can be professionals, too.”

She smiled softly and nodded. “I had fun. But we need to focus. There’s something we both need to get ready for.”

The fun with Brooke was over. I got up from my seat and regained my composure. “Maybe after this is all over, we can have some more fun.”

“I wouldn’t be against that. Maybe you can invite your squadmate.”

  “Uh… Which one?”

She giggled. “The redhead, of course. She’s pretty.”

  “Hmm… Never noticed.”

She got up from her seat and patted me on the chest. “Life on campus can’t be all about going through Junctions and leveling up.”

  “True. There’s also training.”

I laughed but she rolled her eyes and slapped me on the arm. “In that case… Stay focused, cadet. You might be an Omega but you’re still just a Bronze.”

She leaned forward and kissed me on the cheek before I stepped out of her room.

As I made my way down the empty halls back to my room, my communicator vibrated against my arm.

  SYNERGY with LIAM ALDRIDGE

Nina Higashi - Level 2: +3 increase to speed

Quentin Young - Level 2: 5% damage resistance

Paige Costa - Level 2: 5% increase to saber damage

Brooke Silvestri - Level 3: 10% increase to saber damage

  “That’s a lot of damage…”

Hooking-up with Brooke was enough to make me smile. The damage bonus might’ve been the best part though. Now it was time to put that bonus to use.

  36: In The Stars

“Bronze. Two-Star. In order to earn your new rank, you must demonstrate your proficiency with the most basic abilities. Slash. Thrust. Parry. The foundation of any competent Cavalier is your offense and your defense. Should you decide to switch classes, your foundation does not change. Even a Gunrunner or Harbinger fighting on the outside will have to deal with the nearby threat of Shadows. A Vanguard will have to do more than be a meat shield for his squad. Earn your second-star and you will be on your way to being a complete Omega.”

Captain Hamilton stood right in front of me, his ch
est puffed out like always.

“Do you have any questions, cadet?”

“I guess I can’t ask what exactly I’ll be fighting.”

“Step onto the grid and find out for yourself.”

We were the only people in the small training lab, so it was a lot more spacious than it actually was. He stayed near the entrance next to the digital display tablet and swiped his finger on it. I brought my saber up and readied myself. Blue lines pulsed on the walls and floor as the lights above dimmed.

“Bronze Star Rank Examination. Level two. Combat initiated.” An automated female voice came over the speaker.

Digital drones formed in the air above me and immediately descended upon me. The exercise wasn’t much different from the Omega Trial.

If someone told me a week ago I’d be wielding a sword and turning drones into digital dust, I wouldn’t have believed them. Now I was wielding my saber like it was a part of me.

Vicious wolves. Giant worms and flying bats. A giant Basilisk. I’d seen enough in the Junctions not to be intimidated by a bunch of drones. I slashed and swiped at them as they tried to attack. The ones that moved with greater speed were parried away and met the same fate as the others.

I managed to stay standing in the center of the training lab when the lights above brightened. The pulsing lines in the room around me began to fade.

“Bronze Star Rank Examination level two completed.”

I sighed a deep breath of satisfaction and wiped the bead of sweat from my forehead.

Captain Hamilton walked up to me and nodded. “Congratulations. How do you feel?”

“Honestly? That might’ve been the easiest thing I’ve done so far. I’m guessing it gets a lot harder…”

“The two-star exam was never meant to push you hard. It’s a test of basic competency. As you ascend in rank, the examinations will test everything you have at your disposal. Abilities. Fighting prowess. Battlefield IQ and generalship. Decision-making.”

“A foundation. Got it… What exactly do I get for making it to two-star?”

“Besides the prestige of another star on your armor?” The smirk on his face hadn’t gone away. “You get a weekly stipend increase. And confidence in the basic techniques I’ve taught. Perhaps Engineer Gage might be willing to craft you a more potent weapon. And…”
