Corrupt Love

“I know. Can you really see me living in a house with dog hair on the furniture?”

“You have a point there. What if there was one who didn’t shed?”

“Do they make such a thing?”

I laughed. “I suppose they’re out there. Let’s ask Rocky when we get there. He’d know, right?”

  “Yeah, he’d know.”

When we were inside and Rocky let us into the back, I asked if he’d ever heard of dogs or cats that didn’t shed.

“Oh, yeah. There’s the Sphinx cat, who has no fur, and there are several breeds of dog that either don’t shed or don’t shed very much. You want one?”

Since Dan was already shaking his head, I answered, “No, just curious.”

We played with the dogs for hours. All the dogs that had been there the first time I was here had been adopted, and there was a whole new set of little tail-waggers. “But, they’re so cute!” I whined to Dan.

“Yes. They’re cute. But you’re cute too, and I’m at maximum cute capacity for me to retain my man card.”

I stared at him and burst out laughing. “I cannot believe you just said that to me,” I said, trying to breathe while holding my stomach.

He chuckled and tossed the slobbery ball for the retriever again.

That was life with Dan. I never knew when he’d bust out something hilarious or even sometimes so downright sexy it took all my self-control not to jump his bones. For example, he’d come home from work one night and pinned me to the wall with his dick. Yeah, did not see that one coming.

It was a great life. We had a routine that we stuck to just to make life easier for Dan. I never wanted him to feel out of control or anxious, so I was careful not to spring shit on him. I was ok with that. I liked knowing I’d get to see him. I liked knowing I’d get to enjoy him.

He was doing his Saturday cleaning while I slept in from a job the night before. I could tell he was getting antsy to pull the sheets off the bed I was in because I could hear him pacing in the hallway outside of the bedroom. I couldn’t help but giggle, and I knew he heard me because the door was open.

“Don’t laugh at me.” He pouted from the doorway.

I rolled over and took in the sight of him in his jersey shorts and t-shirt. His lean muscles and sweet face never failed to turn me on. “I can’t help it. You’re just so...Dan.”

He rolled his eyes and said, “Well, who am I supposed to be? Can I wash those sheets now?” He yanked the covers down to find me in his t-shirt and nothing else. “Well, I suppose they can wait for one more round,” he said, then jumped on me.

  So. Fucking. Sexy.

There’s an old, cliched saying, “Love isn’t something you find. Love is something that finds you.”

Dan and I prove that theory. I was perfectly happy with my life before I met him. I didn’t even think about settling down in the distant future, never wanted the 2.5 kids or the dog. I wasn’t looking. Never bothered to leave my number on the nightstand, and never had the inkling to. The only goal I had was get as much dick as I wanted and to hit my goal of one hundred kills by my thirtieth birthday (I did, by the way. Sucks that there were that many slimy, vile people in the world). And it even started that way with Dan, in a way. I didn’t want a relationship with him, and I certainly wasn’t looking to love him. I wanted to corrupt him, ruin him, lay waste to his innocence.

But the thing about Dan is that he’s not vulnerable to corruption. I’d found that my Dan wasn’t really vulnerable to anything. Once he was made aware of the things that held him back, he tackled them. That’s not vulnerability. That’s strength. There were times I could see that he felt vulnerable and weak. But my purpose with him was no longer corruption. I was always meant to love Dan.

“Dude, watch the walls! They were just fucking painted!” I scowled at Salty as he carried in one of my dining room chairs.

After a year of dating, switching off sleepovers, cooking together, and learning how the other ticked, we decided that we still liked each other and thought it would be, just tops, to live together. So we flipped a coin to see who’d move. I did.

Dan’s idea of decorating was putting a print he bought from TJ Maxx up in the living room.

So we painted. Accessorized. Argued over the necessity of a beaded throw pillow. I thought it looked nice, he said he was not interested in finding beads in his ass when we fucked on the couch.

Well, maybe not in those words. But you get the gist.

And we did not get the beaded throw pillow. Dan proved his point when we got back from that shopping trip and tossed me to the sofa and proceeded to show me that throw pillows on the couch were altogether a flashy and inefficient purchase.

I loved that man. I loved how he had his entire life upended, his solid moral ground shaken, and adapted to a new theory— not without obstacles, sure. But he was strong enough to come back to me.

  I loved that man.

  Dan

  Samesies.
