“But I let you down again,” Tyler pointed out, knowing he could very well be shooting himself in the foot. But he needed to talk this through with Annie before they could possibly think about building a future together.
“You didn’t let me down. You made a difficult choice, and I respect that,” she said.
“So you forgive me?” he asked.
Annie smiled, and Tyler couldn’t remember ever seeing anything so lovely. “There’s nothing to forgive.”
Hope grew inside him. “Yeah, there probably is, but I appreciate your saying that.” He scratched the side of his face. “Because the reason I’m here is to tell you I’ve come back to Falling Star to stay.”
“What about your case? What about your partner? I thought he was depending on you.”
Tyler stepped forward and wrapped Annie in a loving embrace again. “He was. But I managed to find another great lawyer to join the firm and take my place. She’ll handle the case quite well. And if she needs any help, I’ll be available.” He grinned. “By phone.”
He could see the tears in Annie’s eyes as she looked up at him. He only hoped those were tears of joy.
“That’s wonderful. But do you really want to move back? I know how much your job at the law firm must mean to you.”
Tyler lightly brushed her cheek. “My job there is in the past. It never meant as much to me as you and Courtney do. Truthfully, I enjoyed working at the ranch more. I feel like I’m continuing my family’s legacy and growing the business. I really liked what I was doing.”
“Are you sure? Because I was just packing to go to New York.”
Tyler couldn’t believe his eyes. For the first time since he’d stepped inside Annie’s house, he looked around. Her suitcase was on the floor by the couch. “Why were you coming to New York?”
She leaned forward and brushed her lips across his. When he tried to deepen the kiss, she backed away. “I was coming to tell you I love you and I’ll marry you and live in New York, if that’s what it takes to be with you.”
Stunned, Tyler stared at her. “You’re kidding, right?”
“Nope. I’ve been miserable since you left, and eventually, I realized that I wanted to be with you. No matter what. No matter where.”
Tyler felt like he’d just won the lottery. He gathered Annie close. “Well, if it’s all the same to you, I think I’d like to stay here in Falling Star. Now about that getting married part—”
Annie kissed him again. “I’m afraid that’s nonnegotiable, counselor. It’s marriage or nothing. I’m not the sort for an affair.”
Tyler chuckled, feeling happier than he’d ever felt. He wasn’t sure he deserved to be this happy, but thankfully, he’d found Annie again after all these years.
“My sentiments exactly,” he said, giving her a quick kiss. “I want to get married. And maybe have a couple of children.”
“I’d love to have a couple of children too,” she said with a smile.
He grinned. “Annie Palmer, I love you, and I’ll love you forever.”
She returned his grin, unable to contain all the happiness she was feeling. “I love you too. I guess my falling star wish worked.”
He laughed. “What did you wish for?”
“For us to both be happy,” she said. “I’d hoped we would be together, and now that’s come true.”
Tyler wrapped Annie in his arms and kissed her, knowing that after all these years, he’d finally found his way back home.
