Heartfelt Lies

"Woah, slow your roll there big daddy. I'm gonna need a minute to recover from this big boy first," I state, holding my arms out for my baby boy.

Kohl places our precious bundle gently in my arms before joining me in the bed. "Is this okay?" He slides an arm behind my back and pulls me to him, placing a soft kiss to my forehead.

"More than okay, it's perfect," I smile.

"I just want to soak up as much time as I can with just the three of us before everyone gets here. My money's on Reed showing up first. He's been watching you like a hawk since he moved here."

"Do you think we're selfish for not calling them until after Kade was born?" I ask, running a finger softly across his rosy baby cheek. My heart's so full of love for my husband and son, it could burst.

"Nope," Kohl shakes his head, "not selfish at all. We needed this time alone. I didn't think it were possible to love you more than I already did before today, but I was wrong. Watching you bring our son into this world… nothing will ever compare to that. I'm so in love with you Ella, with both of you," he whispers, staring deep into my soul. His pale green eyes shine bright, filled with the same unconditional love and devotion I see every time our eyes meet.

A loud knock has our heads turning toward the door. In walks a pretty nurse rolling a blood pressure stand beside her. "Hi! Sorry to interrupt, I just need to check your vitals. I promise I'll be out of your hair as quick as possible."

"No worries, that just means I get to steal my little man back," Kohl says, smiling as he stands and takes the baby from my arms. He places a tender kiss to Kade's little head as he walks back to the window.

"Have you been cramping?" the nurse asks while pressing down on my stomach.

"Not too bad," I grimace at the slight uncomfortable pressure.

"Good. Everything looks great. Let's check your blood pressure and temp, then I'll leave you two alone to enjoy that handsome boy."

My brows draw together in concentration as she turns sideways, to pull her cart next to the bed. I know this woman. But, where have I seen her before? She is pretty, with a long dark pony tail hanging low on her back. She turns back to me with a smile, her blue-gray eyes full of kindness. Her blue-gray eyes! Oh. Shit.

"Knock, knock," is whispered from hallway.

I immediately jerk my head in the direction of Reed's voice. He stands in the half-open doorway, his arms filled with balloons, and flowers.

"Is it safe to come in?" he asks, stepping into the room.

All I can do is nod my head in approval.

"These are for you, little mama." He nods at the beautiful bouquet of flowers as he places them on the bedside table. And these are for Uncle Reed's—" he stops mid-sentence, left speechless at the sight of the woman standing next to my bed. "Emerson?" he whispers.
