Let the Guilty Pay

Page 26

by Rick Treon

About halfway through the book, Beck discusses how he’s “too nice,” and how deciding to be that way has impacted his adult life. In the end, he says he’s proud of being “too nice.” What was your reaction to that speech based on what you knew about Beck at the time? What, if anything, did it foreshadow?

At what moment did you realize Veronica’s connection to Butch? How did you react to that revelation?

What was your reaction to reading the scene during which Summer is killed? Did you see it coming? If so, what clues led you there?

Was Summer destined to die, based on the mindset and future intentions of other characters? If Summer hadn’t died that night, what future do you think she would’ve had?

Discuss the punishment each character received for their misdeeds. Did you enjoy how the author handled those punishments? If not, why?
