The Chance of a Lifetime

by kendra Smith

This book has been given a re-birth since it was first published as Jacaranda Wife in 2015. Part of my journey that has been the most valuable to me is the support, laughs and moving of crockery to demonstrate plot points at the DWLC with Claire Dyer, Adrienne Dines, Kerry Fisher and Alison Sherlock – without you all, I think I would have thrown in the keyboard a long while ago! And I am extremely grateful to my fabulous new editor, Hannah Smith, for her enthusiasm and professionalism and am very lucky to be working with her and the whole editorial team at Aria Fiction/Head of Zeus. To know my book has gone through the capable hands of Helena Newton and Sue Lamprell is a joy for a – sometimes befuddled – writer. Thanks also to Lucy Hartopp and Sarah Taylor-Smith for last-minute medical checks! Any errors are entirely mine.

And, of course, to all my family. My mum, my sisters – to listening (maybe snoring through) monologues from me about agents, publishers – POV, voice… To my fabulous three boys, and, most especially, my husband who has provided constant support. And finally, this book is for my dad, David Oswald Smith, who died in 1991, leaving behind a very bewildered twenty-something and a gap that can never be filled. He’d tell me, ‘You know, Kendra, easy reading is damn hard writing,’ borrowing the quote from the American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne.

You know what, Dad? You were right.
