While the nice buzz in my head silenced all the doubts that usually circled, I took out my phone and showed her my steady hand. “I’m fine, and alert enough to set my phone on alarm.”
“See you tomorrow.” She kissed my cheek.
I saluted her like this was the Army and said, “Absolutely. We’ll do respectable wine tomorrow night.”
The rain that pattered on my face and arms didn’t matter. I was on my way to Scotland. A few hundred years ago this sort of trip was made by couples wanting to escape and elope, but no one was in love with me.
Probably no one ever would be. I’d have to settle for moving on, and hopefully save enough funds to adopt my own children. It wasn’t a bad plan, especially since it was all I had left, other than writing in my diary until I passed out for a few hours.

End of Books stuff
I have to tell you that I argued with my editor on Johnny having so many brothers. His character and backstory fascinated me. So I decided to write some short stories to fill in the Dawes family.
And Olivia was just hard to get into for a while. In some ways she’s the most like me with her background. Editors had no idea surplussed is a word that’s tossed around by teachers when population shifts. They automatically went right to our current pandemic as the root cause. But people taking their children out of public schools is a real thing. I saw it as a public high school teacher. So when I was writing it, I didn’t make the leap automatically to current events at all.
The other issue was the Uber driver though I just said shared ride picking up Bradley. Editors were aghast he could order himself a ride and were all ‘their are rules that they can’t pick up children.’ Yet I’d shared rides with children in the share option when I lived in Miami and my car was in the shop. And I also know our high school security detail stayed outside the door to ensure none of the children skipped in a shared car. So the whole aghast thing also confused me.
Now as to why this story was important to me, like every story I wanted a story that first entertains me. I get that not everyone understands my humor. When I say something and half a group will laugh and the other half will look at me like I’m a crazy chicken saying stupid things, so I am always happy when people do understand me. And you as my reader are why I can continue to do this all the time.
So I’m super thankful to you for all your support! Next month I’ll talk about the Scottish books and how that branched off what I intended to write and threw off my schedule entirely. I had no idea guys with kilts would suddenly fascinate me.
