“Good boy, Max.” His sweet dog had an empathetic streak in him.

“Does anyone have a first aid kit?” Robert asked of the people nearby as he pressed the white cloth onto Ben’s hand.

Ben’s face paled as he saw blood seep through the napkin. Not just pale, white as a sheet. Robert didn’t want to alarm the man, but he was about thirty seconds from hitting the ground. Robert rested his hand on Ben’s back. “All right, Ben. I’m going to have you tip your head down between your knees. Don’t worry about this cut. I’ve got it.

Robert continued the pressure on Ben’s palm as the man lowered his head and sucked in a few deep breaths.

  “That’s great. You’re doing great.”

Robert kept pressure on the wound as Ben’s complexion finally pinked up. A couple minutes later, Ben raised his head and Robert gestured to the glass of iced tea that had appeared on the table. “Take a couple of sips of tea. Another minute of pressure should stop the bleeding and then I’ll patch you up.”

In Robert’s experience, if he explained what he was doing, it put his patients at ease. Half the concerns people had with doctors was really a fear of the unknown. It was important to remove that unknown as much as possible.

If he had followed his own advice, maybe he wouldn’t have found himself stuck in this small town right now.

A first aid kit appeared on the table and Robert checked the wound again. The bleeding had finally slowed. Robert closed Ben’s fingers over the cloth and then dug into the first aid kit. If the small kit didn’t have what he needed, he could grab his medical bag from the car, but he was pleased to find the proper supplies.

Robert cleaned the area with an alcohol wipe and Ben winced. “Ow. That stings.”

“Sorry about that. The worst is over.”

Ben nodded, rubbing his hand down Max’s coat. He wasn’t an official therapy dog, but he had keyed in on people’s stress more than once. Robert was thankful for his mutt right now, keeping Ben calm while Robert tended to the man’s injuries.

He grabbed two butterfly bandages and quickly secured them on Ben’s palm and then paused to make sure the bleeding had indeed stopped. All he needed was to mess up on his first day in town. After he had checked the wound one last time, he pressed a large gauze square to Ben’s palm and began wrapping his hand with medical tape.

“Thanks, Doc. I appreciate it. I wouldn’t have had time to wait at the clinic to get this looked at.”

Robert cleaned up the few supplies he used and tucked the remaining ones back into the first aid kit. “I was happy to—”

  “What do you think you’re doing?”... ... ... ... ...
