“Clothes, as you might know, can’t handle that many formations, but they can have more innate effects. These pants and shirts try to blend with your surroundings and keep you dry and warm. Also, they’re hard to tear. You lot are driving the tailors nuts with your rapid movements.”

Taran threw out drop pouches and medical bags. “Eyes here! These drop pouches are selective storage devices!” He pulled out a magazine and put it into the drop pouch.

“Dump what you need in here. It will remain like this unless you close it.” He closed the top of the drop pouch and opened it. There was no magazine. “Ta-da! The magazine is stored away. You can set it to accept everything or just when you close the drop pouch!”

He picked up the medical pouches and opened them. “These are new-issue medical pouches! Open yours as well!”

  Erik looked inside.

“Erik, you were the one who designed these things?” Taran said.

“Inside, you have two IO devices. Apply these to the IO locations in the shoulders, under the knees, and above the ankles. They will automatically drill into the patient. There are also two IV needles. There is one potion pack, with three units of Stamina potions to one unit of healing potion. Medical scissors to get through clothes. Chest seal is pretty self-explanatory. Make sure you have them in a position to drain blood if you can. Gauze to plug that wound, bandages to hold it in place, a fourteen-gauge catheter if people get tension pneumothorax, duct tape to hold shit in place, a treated gauze with a clotting powder embedded into it, and a tourniquet. These basic kits should deal with most issues. You can do self-aid or buddy aid, even with a fucked-up hand, till a medic can get to you.

“Pack them up with the things you’ll need first in an emergency last so you can grab it first. Tourniquet to start, scissors, then have chest seal, clotting gauze, normal gauze, bandage, IO and IV kits, catheter, duct tape at the end. Oh, also have a casualty tag. If you do not have a pen anywhere else, keep one here. Write on the patient’s forehead and chest if you can. If you’re working on yourself, use the casualty tag. The potion bag contains two hundred milliliters of the good stuff. Deal with the bleeds and get it into you as quick as possible. Healing and Stamina formations will help you out, but they’re general. Plug the potion bag closest to the site of the wound. You won’t have much time with the bag, but you should have extras in your storage rings. Remember to use your patient’s equipment before you use yours. Unless you are the medic.”

Erik saw them all digesting the information.

“On the topic of self-aid formations, some of the formation masters have created a new type of tattoo that you can place on your body. It will passively heal and link to a power device you can hold on your belt or vest,” Rugrat said.

He pulled down his shirt, showing a formation tattooed on his chest, and held out a small pouch on his belt. He popped it open, revealing an Earth-grade mana stone and formations surrounding it. “The tattoo can be removed later.”

“Great, looks like I need to get a tattoo now.” Erik packed up his medical kit.

“If your body will let you. Need to make some new needles to get through your chest. Also, it might be destroyed with you tempering your body. I had to get my tattoos redone. Kind of sweet, being able to get a different set of tattoos.”

“I wondered if they looked different.”

They got extra sets of clothes, and Erik checked the rest of his gear. It had been repaired and maintained since returning from the Sixth Realm.

He was waiting for a new rifle; there wasn’t currently anything better than his helmet and gloves. Having both meant he could do more healing, and if he was really needed, he could put on the Tropic Thunder gloves.

“How long until I can get one of your rifles?”

“They are still going through testing with the army units. Once tactics are ironed down, more of the rifles will be available.” Rugrat spoke like a senior to his junior.

“You got the rest of the team to work overtime to make your rifle.”

“It’s awesome, right?” Rugrat pulled out a large rifle. It had a meter-and-a half-long barrel; four cooling blocks ran down it. It had a bipod forward and a short cut-down foregrip behind.

  “Gun porn.”

Rugrat’s face twitched as he heard Erik’s “cough.”

They got changed into their new gear; some replaced gear that had broken. The old armor plates were tossed into a bin to be passed t
o new recruits if they were in good enough condition or to be melted down and turned into the next gen plates.

“These are the new stealth sheets and formation-tapped rounds.” Taran tossed out boxes of ammunition and then sheets.

They passed magazines around. They had color-coded stripes on the tip of the bullet for what type they were. Silenced rounds were the most popular.

  “Silencers too.”

Everyone checked the new silencers. They had just one formation on them to remove the sound. They would silence the weapons and the rounds.

Erik checked the magazines, taking explosive round-filled magazines, silenced rounds, non-lethal lightning rounds. He pulled out his rifle, sliding on the silencer and snapping it into place over the barrel.

“Those things are sweet. Real pain in the ass to track anyone down in,” Gong Jin said.

“Short power life when the formation is active. Should last about three minutes off internal power.”

“So, charge them before heading out and whenever you can,” Rugrat said.

“Yeah, and a really cool feature”—Gong Jin pulled on tabs on the sheet—“these can attach to your carrier. You jump on the ground, pull the top of the sheet over your head, and you disappear. Can even crawl with this thing on you. There’s another tab you can hook to your upper legs and helmet. Easy to pull it off if you need. Great for recon ops, even if you don’t power up the formation.”

“The newer versions will have a second formation that will allow you to power with a remote power device, like Rugrat’s new tattoos,” Taran said.

“Damn, this is some comfortable gear.” Erik moved in his new clothes as they headed out of the compound.

“Zhou Heng and his people know how to make a nice pair of pants and shorts!”

“You can barely call those things shorts.”

“Girls have miniskirts. I have short shorts.”

Erik rolled his eyes as he pulled out a necklace and a mask.

Erik put on the mask and the amulet. Then he pulled out the emblem of the city lord and affixed it to his cloak.

Rugrat changed as well, while the special teams pulled on their armored helmets. The aura around them changed. People bowed their heads in greeting and moved to the side as the cloaked party passed.

Rugrat whistled as they neared the totem.

The sound of wings and feet could be heard. They paused before the totem defenses; the special team mounted up as George dove in from above, landing next to Rugrat. He wore all new armor; his eyes were clearer, and there was a sense of maturity.

Gilly came to a stop next to Erik. She wore her own armor as well.

“You’re growing again, aren’t you?” Erik patted her back and jumped up. Two lumps had started to form above her shoulders and ran down her sides. She leaned forward more now as her front limbs were growing out and thickening.

She turned her head to look at Erik.

  “Let’s head to Vuzgal.”

Gong Jin and his team moved around Erik and Rugrat on their own mounts before they headed through the gates of the totem’s defenses.

In a flash of light, Alva disappeared, and real sunlight shined down upon them. The totem was packed with people coming and going, orderly lines moving in each direction.

“We’ll have to build another totem soon,” Rugrat said, moving screens around.

Gong Jin led them toward the exit. People stared at them and their mounts. The special team members had all kinds of mounts now, one of the privileges of their position.

Erik and Rugrat quickly cleared the screens, waiting for somewhere more private.

The beast trainers had excelled with access to all kinds of different environments and training the beasts in the combat dungeons. Each beast was battle tested and true alphas of their race.

The mounts near the totem shied away from their powerful auras, bowing their heads. Some of the weaker mounts were shaking.

“Making a ruckus with their mounts—who do they think they are?” one merchant demanded as his leading beast was filled with fear and stopped moving forward.

“Friend, if you want to have your head cut off, please do it with other passengers,” a noble-looking man sitting beside him said in a low whisper.

“What do you mean?” the trader asked indignantly.

The group headed toward the gates out of the totem. Members of the army and the police saluted and moved to the side, opening the gate and allowing the group past.

“Allowing them into the city without checking their information. They must be from the guilds or the associations,” the trader said with a pale face.

“Even the Adventurer’s Guild has to be checked before entering Vuzgal. I heard that the Fourth Realm Blue Lotus leader had to go through a brief inspection,” the noble-looking man said.

“Then who are they?” the trader asked.

“Did you notice the masks and the emblems on those two men’s chests?”

“It looked like the tower at the center of Vuzgal.”

“I have seen that symbol once before, but it wasn’t as grand. Hiao Xen wore it. Those two…I think they’re the city lords.”

“The city lords?” The trader shook, just as his beast had earlier.

A carriage waited for Erik and Rugrat. They quickly stepped inside.

Ten Realms Experience flooded their bodies.

Rugrat laughed. “Shit, I just leveled up and got some titles.”

“Same here. Damn, they’ve been working hard.” Erik pulled up his stat sheet.

Hiao Xen was in his office, looking over Vuzgal. There was a knock at the door.

“Come in.” He turned back from the gardens and Vuzgal. The door opened, and Erik and Rugrat walked in.

They pulled off their masks as their security detail waited in the lobby.

“Hiao Xen.” Erik smiled and shook his hand.

“Erik, Rugrat.” He nodded in greeting, smiling as he shook Rugrat’s hand and waved to the couches. “I heard you were back in contact some time ago. I wondered how long it would take before you appeared here.”
