Deacon pulled a single sapling from its container and while it wasn’t more than a few inches tall, Kate could already see the little coil of stringy roots tangling and twisting as they established themselves in the clod of dirt.

“I want to watch these trees grow and flourish over the years, just like our love.” He wrapped Kate’s hands around the miniature tree and then cupped his own over them, cradling the evergreen in their palms. “We’ve had nothing but Douglas firs since the day we opened the farm and I think it’s time to change that. If you’ve taught me anything, Kate, it’s that change doesn’t always have to be scary. Sometimes it just means adding something better to what you already have.”

“Like adding me to your payroll,” she teased with a wink as she bumped her hip into his in jest.

“Or adding my last name to yours.” He returned the spruce to its container and shook off the dirt from his hands. “You know, when we hired you, I thought I was going to be the one doing the teaching. Instead, you’ve taught me more about life and love than any humble cowboy could ever deserve.”

As she looked out over the acreage, heart swelling with gratitude for this farm and for Deacon’s family who persevered and prayed to keep this dream alive, Kate fought to hold back her tears. Thankfulness, love, and hope overwhelmed her.

“I love you, Kate,” Deacon said, pulling her close under the December night sky. “Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas, Deacon.” Kate leaned forward and kissed him, knowing she’d found her forever. After years of searching for its purpose, her heart was finally home.
