I leaned against the wall beside her as another round of bullets pierced the wall near us. The bullets were getting close, and we could not stay here, or we were sitting ducks.
She angled her gun over the wall and fired a few rounds toward the men hiding close to us. “They aren’t after him. They are after you or me. Maybe both of us,” said Ginevra.
I looked at the last door down the hall. There had to be a way out from that bedroom. If not hopefully, there were more weapons inside. It was our only hope.
I looked at the bedroom door then back to her. “Cover me, and when I get the door open, I will cover you.”
“Hurry.” She popped her head away from the wall and opened fire.
I ran and slid down the hall toward the door. I could feel the bullets flying past my face. Jumping to my feet I turned and fired a shot at the man almost on top of Ginerva. Turning to the door, I shot the lock off the door and burst inside. Bending low at the door, I fire several rounds as Ginerva ran inside past me.
Closing the door, I locked it and pushed the desk against the door. The desk was useless besides having pretty stationery and envelopes.
Ginerva ran her hands through her long black hair. “The desk won’t hold them off forever.”
“We don’t need forever, just fifteen minutes.” I ran toward the window. Grabbing the lamp on the table, I bust the window. Yanking the curtain down, I draped it over the small broken pieces of the glass. We were not high enough to die. I would rather a broken bone than being killed or raped.
I looked down toward the street. A wave of nausea overcame me, and I closed my eyes.
“What’s wrong? Do you see more men down there?” asked Ginerva.
“Nothing.” I was not going to tell her that I was afraid of heights.
Grabbing the wall, I climbed out the window. Ignoring the pieces of glass that fell over the edge, I scooted toward the right where I saw a balcony.
I heard several shouts as the bedroom door vibrated, causing the desk against it to scoot.
“Move your ass. We don’t have all day,” said Ginerva. She climbed out of the window and without a word, grabbed my hand and jumped off the ledge.
We landed in an open dumpster. Her hand covered my mouth as a huge hairy black rat jumped on my head. I frantically shook my head thrusting the rat off.
My hands rubbed down my body as I tried to find my gun. Closing my eyes, I bit my lip. I must have left the gun upstairs. Glancing over at Ginerva, she had her gun tucked at the side of the dumpster ready to fire.
A door slammed shut. The smell of Cuban cigars filled the air.
“Vincenzo is stupid. By the time he realizes what has happened, we’ll have his lady, and he’ll be forced to do what we want him to do.”
“I hope you’re right. He is crazy, and we don’t need him gunning for us. The mafia always wants to run everything, but they are boys with egos. Let them kill each other and when the dust settles, they are dead, and we are rich,” a man said.
When their footsteps faded in the distance, I looked at her, and we jumped out the dumpster. Suddenly, I heard shouts from up in the bedroom.
“They’ve spotted us.” I pointed to the window we had jumped out of and ran down the alley around the corner. Ginerva was behind me when I heard her scream. Turning around, I saw that a man had her in a bear hug lifting her off her feet. I picked up the gun she dropped and fired.
