Blinking rapidly, he stared at me, his mouth falling open. “I don’t…” With a frown, he shook his head. “No. I’m sterile.”
“But what if you’re not?” I repeated. “This is a possibility, and we need to plan just in case. You’re the planner. We need to start using condoms until you get that checked out.”
“Sweetness…” But as he pondered the validity of my statement, my hope grew. The bond between us flared even brighter and happier than before, the yellow nauseatingly neon. But I embraced that, too.
“We could get pregnant,” he whispered as he wormed his way around the dog to hug me fiercely. “Someday.”
“Yes, we could,” I whispered back. “Now, isn’t that memory going to be better than porn dreams on the old rug?”
“Well…”
I sighed loudly as he hugged me close to him, squeezing me tight. “My hand is going to be bruised from smacking you.”
“You’re so jealous. I’ll take any memories you’ll give me, sweetness.” He laughed as he kissed me.
“So how did your meeting go?”
“Great.” His smile grew wide and proud. “She liked this book, too.”
“Of course she does.”
He took a moment to give me all the details, down to the excuse he gave the agent for not finishing—that he wanted a different ending.
He cocked his head. “Did you ever read the other version? Before I fixed it?”
I dropped my gaze to avoid his. “No. At that time, I was afraid of seeing what you wanted your life to be, if it included me or not. I figured I’d wait and see how it played out.” I shifted as I finally dared to look up at him. “How did that one end?”
He shrugged and gave me that sweet, lopsided smile I loved. “It ended happily ever after. I just wanted to be with you.”
“Even if you can’t chase time anymore?”
“My chasing days are over unless it’s a dog”—he swallowed, and that smile changed to a huge grin—“or a kid. This life is way better.”
“Thank you.” I bit my lip as tears pricked the corners of my eyes.
“For what?”
“Everything.” I still fought to hold back the energy from him, which was wrong of me. Even though I could say I loved him now, it didn’t make all the emotions any easier. But I let all that teal free to flood the bond between us, hiding nothing.
“Sweetness.” Kissing the top of my head, he sighed and hugged me close, his sunny yellow bond welcoming and soothing. “You know, I should thank you for this new rug. What do you say we put the dogs in the kitchen, find some condoms, and make me a new porn memory?”
“That sounds perfect.”

I have to thank Bookie Nookie and her Erotic Enchants group on Goodreads for the origins of this book. In 2012, they had a prompt contest with an image and a little blurb. Bookie chose me to write a short story. However, the story grew out of my comfort zone and became something quite different. There was an aspect I didn't like about it, so I didn't publish it. I sat on it, and thought of how I could fix it.
Years went by...
Flash forward to 2020, and I had just finished my bachelor’s degree and work was shut down for the pandemic. I was home and no longer stressed...so I started writing. I switched to 1st person. I ditched the aspects I didn’t like and gave Marek a point of view. The story grew, and changed, and became something even bigger and more wonderful.
So thank you, Bookie Nookie, for having that event and sparking a whole new world. I’m sorry I didn’t finish it on time.
