  Erith words and phrases

  Arwmverishan - abomination

  Baelthras - six-legged predators

  Brother by vestrait - Brother by marriage (not the same as brother-in-law) – applies to Kester who became Juinis’ brother when Juinis wed Kester’s sister

  Cadre - a White Guard unit, made up of three thirds

  Ethtar - curse word

  Gehthras - ancient Erith word for “open”

  Graduate - an Academy student who has completed all fifteen cycles; highest standing of Erith-trained magicians

  High magic - any form of magic, generally human or Erith, which requires a spell to work it, whether written, spoken or drawn

  mestera ovail - command from a war mage to White Guard to be ready

  Natural magic - innate magic which can be used without a formal spell, e.g. shifkin ability to change form

  Nuin - signifies someone adopted into a House, not part of the blood family, for example Eshan nuin Regersfel

  Shadow-walker - rare type of Erith mage

  Surjusi - unclean spirits, lethal to Erith

  Surrimok - mountain-dwelling predator in mostly-human (or simian) shape; yellow eyes, hands and feet adapted for climbing, and long fur.

  Svegraen - term of address and respect for a member or members of the White Guard; literal translation is “warrior”

  Taellan - refers both to the group of ten high-ranking Erith who make up the council of government for the Erith, answerable only to the Queen and her Consort, and also to an individual member of the council

  Third - a group of five warriors making up part of a cadre

  Urjusi - unclean magic

  vel / vo - female / male versions of signifier of high ranking member of a House, usually the blood family or their vetrai or vetral, for example Eimille vel Falsen and Seggerat vo Regersfel

  Vestrai / Vestrait - married / marriage

  Vestran - betrothed

  Vetrai - wife

  Vetral - husband

  Vicandula - plant, also known as Erith gravestone

  War mage - mage who has completed all fifteen cycles of the Academy and graduated in discipline of war mage; entitled to wear the cloak of a war mage; swear oaths to protect the Erith

  White Guard - elite warriors, undergo rigorous training, rank depicted by braids on their uniforms
