Pressing a swift, light kiss to Calcourt’s willing lips, she slowly disentangled himself from his arms. Calcourt watched her walk to the door of the church with bemused curiosity, half-lost in the rosy glow of her scent on his hands and lips.
He sat up, eyes wide, as Mary opened the door, held her hands to her mouth and shouted.
‘Rebecca! Rebecca, wake up!’ She half-turned back to Calcourt, her smile just visible, before turning back to shout again. ‘Rebecca, the Reverend has asked me for his hand in marriage! I am going to accept! Even dressed in a nightgown!’
‘Mary, what are you—’
‘What?’ Mary turned, eyes wide, as the glow of a newly-lit candle grew visible from Rebecca and John’s room. ‘The children sleep far away from this little courtyard.’
‘But the guardians will hear you!’
‘Yes. They will.’ Mary shrugged. ‘A small, localised scandal.’
Calcourt rose to his feet. He strode to Mary’s side, taking her in his arms before she could react. Smothering her in kisses, her delighted laughter warming him to his bones, he felt his own laughter bubbling in his throat as he pulled her closer still.
‘You are the most wonderful woman I have ever known.’ He kissed her neck, smiling as the distant sound of Rebecca’s excited voice travelled on the clear night air. ‘What on earth is Mrs. Peterson going to think, when she finds you in a chapel in your nightgown?’
‘She is going to think I am happy. She’s going to think you’re happy, too.’ Mary smiled, radiant in the moonlight. ‘And she’s going to be very, very right.’
