“I really am.” They stood quietly for a beat before Charlie said, “I love you, Emma.”

  Emma leaned in and kissed her. “Come by later. I’m making lasagna for the special.”

  Charlie’s eyes went comically wide. “I love your lasagna.”

  “I know you do.” She brushed a chunk of hair off Charlie’s forehead, tucked it behind her ear. Then she turned, looked both ways, and started across the street. She heard Charlie open her car door and called to her. “Hey, Charlie?”

  Charlie turned, brows raised.

  “I love you, too.”
