It still amused her to no end that he took issue with the fact that Philip spent many nights with her. When Oliveira threatened to fire him for messing with his granddaughter, Philip resigned.
Oliveira rehired him for more money rather than see him headhunted by a rival. And Philip continued his quest to rid the world of bad shits. Although, he took offense at her calling him Dexter.
As to her side job with KM? While Carla still kept in touch with Mother and her sisters, she’d retired.
More or less.
Philip’s hobby inspired her. Given her past, she developed a new calling, helping battered women get away from their abusers. And if those abusers wouldn’t let go…their accidental deaths appeared as fortuitous coincidence.
All in all, life was good. She still drove a minivan, the must-have for any soccer mom. Her son was safe and, best of all, he’d given Carla permission, whispering to her as he saw Philip’s car pull in for the sixth time that week, “I like him. He’d make a good Papi.” Nico shoved something into her hand.
She looked at the object in consternation: a plastic ring, still sticky from the caramel popcorn box he’d likely pulled it from.
When Philip walked in with his sexy, “Hey, hot stuff. How was your day?”
She blurted, “Will you marry me?” Then groaned. “Shoot me.”
“I’d rather marry you.” Said a moment before he sealed the promise with a kiss.
Later that night, when he held her in his arms, and she thought he was asleep, she finally said it.
“I love you.”
Then punched him as he channeled Han Solo and said, “I know.”
Tanya read the online invitation and snorted.
Her son caught the sound and said, “What’s up, Mom?”
“Aunt Carla is getting hitched.”
“To a wagon?” her son the smarty-pants asked.
“No, silly, to a man.”
“Are we gonna go? I wanna see Nico.”
“I don’t see why not. It’s after your tournament in Quebec.” That happened to coincide with an easy spying gig that Mother had landed Tanya.
What she didn’t expect was to run into Cory’s daddy while she was there...
