“Because I like you, Ali. I listen to you. I care about the things you have to say. I love hearing about your childhood, and your favorite flowers, and all the crazy things Milo Baptiste said when you lived in France, because I love spending time with you. It’s all I want to do.”
All the air left Ali’s lungs. She didn’t even know what to say. “But—but the surf lessons. The stock check. I thought you’d lost interest.”
Nate shook his head. “I thought you wanted me to back off. You were so focused on your business, and kept saying how Otis had held you back, and I put it all together.”
“Oh, Nate!” Ali cried. “That wasn’t what I was implying at all.”
“I figured, when I saw you with that guy this morning. I realized I was about to lose you, and may as well lay it all on the line. So there you go. I like you, Ali Sweet. And, if you ever decide you like me too, you know where I am. I can wait.”
He handed her the enormous daisies, smiled his dazzling smile, and walked away.
