Iced Raspberry Cookies and a Curse

He gave her a gloomy smile and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “That’s my Ana Banana.”
Ana faced her dad. “In order for me to help, you need to come clean and tell me about magic, the truth about Fable Town, and all that happened with Elsa.”
Her dad nodded, steeling his features and rolling his shoulders back.
When he didn’t answer right away, Ana went on, “Elsa said, she’s your sister and that you’re over two hundred years old. Is that true?”
“It is,” he said.
“And she’s your sister?”
“That’s correct.”
Ana was blown away. “How did I not know any of this? Does mom know? Do Chandi and Lox know?”
He crossed his arms, shaking his head. “No one knows.” He eyed her nervously. “Except those of us who created the spell and cursed Elsa all those years ago.” Her dad closed his eyes as though preparing for some unseen battle. “Now, though everything will change.”
Ana nodded, her eyes drifting towards the window. “Like losing the love of my—” She stopped as a familiar figure came down the sidewalk toward her house. She squinted, thinking she must be seeing things, because it looked like Nate.
Could it be? She stood and was out the door without a word to her dad.
“Ana?” He called after her.
She didn’t respond. She had to see for herself that he was her husband and not a mirage. She flung open the front door and ran down the path to meet him. The closer she got, the more it looked like him. Her husband and the love of her life.
But how was it possible?
Unless Elsa lied.
Or perhaps Nate wasn’t a Narrie after all.
Nate raised a hand in greeting.
Ana couldn’t believe it. She covered her mouth as a pained sob tore through her. Please be real, she thought.
He seemed to notice her agony and dropped his hand, hurrying to her.
But Ana wouldn’t believe, not until she was in his arms.
As though sensing her need, he lifted her into his arms. “Hello Mrs. Decker.” He kissed her.
She grabbed his face, deepening the kiss. Then wrapped her arms around his neck. Tears fell from her eyes, but she couldn’t help it. He was real and she was beyond happy. Finally, she asked, “How are you here?”
He looked at her, confused. “What do you mean?”
She wiped her tears away with the sleeve of her shirt and then took his hand, leading him into the house. “We need to talk.”
“Okay,” he said.
Together, they went through the house and back to her bedroom.
Ana kept an eye out for her dad, but he was gone. Where she didn’t know.
“Have a seat,” she said, instructing him to sit on her bed.
“You’re scaring me,” Nate said, taking her hand. It was then he noticed her ring was gone and he gave her a questioning glance. “What’s going on?”
She told him all she knew. Everything. About the dreams, about seeing things in the mirrors. About Elsa and the fact that she was Ana’s relative and now an opossum. She also told him about Narries and the town being hidden from the rest of the world. Then finally got to what happened to her wedding ring. “I’m so sorry,” she said, twisting her hands in knots when she finished. She didn’t add how strange it was that Nate was still in Fable Town. She knew she was half witch or warlock or something, but what was Nate?
“Hey.” He pulled her onto his lap and wrapped his arms around her so she was cloaked with him. “It’s okay,” he said into her ear.
She snuggled against his chest, desperate to believe he was right.
Nate went on. “It was only a temporary ring anyway, love.” He paused and cleared his throat.
Ana knew he was working through everything she said and she waited, feeling a whole lot better with him so near.
“The other stuff. The magic and Elsa….” He let his voice trail off.
“It’s weird,” Ana said, guessing how he must be feeling because she felt it too. “I mean I’m a doctor. Medicine and science are my life. Am I crazy?” She tugged against one of his muscled arms, pulling him closer.
“If you are, then I’m right there with you.” He chuckled and her anxieties melted away.
This time whatever adversities they faced; they would do it together. “I love you Nate Decker.” She turned in his arms so she could see him.
His eyes searched hers a moment. “I knew there was something magical about you.” He kissed the tip of her nose. “And whatever comes our way, let’s promise to face it together.”
She smiled, grateful he said out loud what she was thinking. “I promise.” In that moment, she felt like they were deepening their vows.
Nate kissed her lightly. “Our love has survived heartache and loss, we can survive magic too, right?”
“Yes, Nate. I believe we can.” She kissed him again, long and deep, determined to make sure he knew how much she adored him and would love him forever.
“Ana, come quick. There’s an emergency at town hall?” Lox was standing at the door to her bedroom, her face flushed and breathing heavily, like she’d been running.
Ana untangled herself from her husband and stood. “Is someone hurt?” She adjusted her clothes and noticed Nate did the same. She didn’t have her medical bag, but she would do her best.
“No, those cookies we made. The iced raspberry sugar cookies?” Lox added, her voice sounding shocked.
“Yeah, what about them?” Ana was confused.
Nate looked puzzled as well.
“Well they’ve come to life and are…” She paused, raising her hands as she talked. “They’re flying around with little raspberry-colored bat wings attacking all the guests.” Lox’s face revealed she wasn’t joking. “I mean what the cake? If I didn’t see it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t believe it.” She shook her head. “There’s more, but I’ll tell you on the way.”
Ana and Nate looked at each other.
Ana went to Lox and hugged her. “We need to find Dad. He’ll know what to do.”
Lox was frazzled. “How will Dad know? And what the freaky frog show is happening in Fable Town?”
Ana didn’t feel right answering the question about their dad. He needed to be the one to tell her. The second question Ana spilled. “It’s magic, Lox. Our town is filled with magic.” Ana let the words come out softly as she put on her coat.
“I think you might be right,” Lox responded, looking at Nate, a wild wonder in her expression.
“She is,” Nate said, taking Ana’s hand. “She always is.”
