“Oh. Yes. Manhattan.” She gave the two of them an odd look and then swept her belongings from the table. “Well, it’s been nice chatting with you. I should probably be getting down to my gate now.”

They held back their laughter until she was out of sight.

“That was a little mean,” Kate finally said, wiping her eyes.

“Ah, go on. It was a great bit of craic, and she deserved it.”

  “She probably thinks we’re grifters.”

“Rubbish. She thinks I’m a millionaire who collects rare violins.” Conor gave her a facetious smile. “And she thinks you’re a gold digger.”

“I am.” Kate moved closer to him. “And I’ve found it.”

“Me, too. I’ve struck gold.” Conor put an arm around her, anchoring himself, grateful to be always coming home.

  Acknowledgments

To paraphrase Woody Allen, going from nothing to the first draft is the hardest part of any writing, but from first draft to finished product is by no means a straight line either. The inside of my head can get as tangled as the “twisted lanes of an old world city,” and I am grateful to the following for serving as my compass: Claire Guare, always the first reader, for putting up with the ebb and flow of my angst; Richard “Red” Lawhern, for technical expertise and gentle corrections, and for teaching me something new with every conversation; Erik Nielsen and Mary Gibson, for musical expertise and insights that helped me get inside the head of a violinist; and Susan Z. Ritz, for her thoughtful critique, and for an open-hearted support that helps more than she knows.

Thanks also to the professionals who guided me the rest of the way: my editor, Averill Buchanan; the cover design team of Andrew and Rebecca Brown from Design for Writers; and interior layout artist, Chenile Keogh. You’ve all contributed what you do best, so whatever is missing is on me.

Of course, I am most grateful to all my readers and the connections I’ve made with so many of you. You can find me through all the social media outlets by visiting my website at www.kathrynguare.com. Or write to me at Kathryn@kathrynguare.com. I’d love to hear from you. About the books, or anything else!

Author of the award-winning Conor McBride Series, Kathryn Guare’s character-driven novels are all somewhere on the spectrum between romance and suspense, and some are even perfectly balanced between the two. She has a passion for exploring diverse cultures and cuisine, Classical music and all things Celtic, and has a habit of mixing these into her stories along with other topics and enthusiasms that capture her interest. Formerly, as an executive with a global health advocacy organization, she traveled extensively throughout the world. Currently, as a native Vermonter, she hates to leave home during foliage season.
