  VOICE

  Song a jingling phrase on one note, ‘a little bit of bread and no cheese’.

  HABITAT

  Arable farmland grassland with banks or hedges. In winter flocks to feed in stubble fields and farmyards. Widespread in much of Europe including Britain, but declining.

  FOOD AND HABITS

  Feeds on grasses, seeds and fruits; also insects. Nest a cup of grass low in a shrub.

  SIZE AND DESCRIPTION

  15cm. Summer male has a rich brown back streaked darker, grey-brown rump, blackish tail with white outer feathers and whitish upperparts. Crown and face are black, with a white collar running into white moustachial streaks; throat and upper breast also black. Winter male, female and juvenile less boldly marked.

  VOICE

  Call ‘tsee-you’. Song a repetitive ‘tsit tsit tsrit tsrelitt’.

  HABITAT

  Marshes, scrub and farmland in much of Europe.

  FOOD AND HABITS

  Feeds mainly on seeds. Often perches on reed stems or telegraph wires. Nest a grassy cup concealed low in vegetation.
