  So far, it has been.

In the years since, I have reconnected with my daughters. Baby steps, but this past Christmas I was invited to dinner with them for the first time. I got to watch my granddaughter open the presents I bought for her and hold my new grandson while he slept.

These are moments that I would fight for.

  That I would die for.

Last I heard, Dianne had given birth to a beautiful baby daughter who she named Alexandra Helen Thornley. A fitting tribute and I believe she is rapidly approaching her third birthday.

This will be the last mention of the name in this book.

  Curtis Drayton.

I kept in touch with McCarthy but that has dropped off over the last year or so. The last update I had was that the man had been assaulted and beaten a number of times whilst in prison, one attack leaving him in a critical condition nursing stab wounds.

I don't condone violence. If anything, this whole experience taught us that it only begets more violence.

At the same time, it doesn't mean I need to feel pity for the man, who I believe requested solitary confinement as he lives out his triple life sentence trapped in a prison of fear.

Sometimes the mighty really do fall.

As this chapter draws to a close, I feel it only fitting that I write a small goodbye to Lucas and Helen. The violent nature of humanity has ensured it is a poorer place without the two of them. I can only hope that they have found each other again in whatever waits for us on the other side.

Until then, I will do my utmost to live my life and hold onto the things I hold dear.

Just like Lucas did. I will try to be like him.

  A good man.
