  It wasn’t enough.

I wasn’t sure if it’d ever be enough.

I shoved the gobbets into my mouth. I chewed them, ground the superfluous flesh until its nectar was freed and sluiced lavishly over my tongue and down my throat. Then I sucked and sucked and sucked. Still not enough. Not. Enough.

  My fangs rang out.

One nicked my finger as I shoveled more chunks into my mouth. Fresh blood welled, and while I would’ve expected it to send my frenzy into a fever pitch, it had the opposite effect. Maybe because, well, once I saw my own blood, I felt the pain of the cut. And it hurt. Like ten thousand paper cuts, hurt.

  I mean, ouch.

  Ouch!

What the Hellbound was with that?

I was a super cool vampiress now and the equivalent of a needle prick freakin’ afflicted me strongly enough to cut off a fit of blood lust cold?

  Wait…

  I was…

  Wasn’t I?

I ran to the bathroom to check the mirror. There they were. Opalescent, long, gleaming and—ow, I nicked another finger—sharp. Fangs. My fangs. Mine.

  They were cool.

  I was cool.

  I’d won.

  Wait… I’d won?

I ran back to the kitchen to find the note again. There it was, in all its handwritten glory on all that cottony Blood Conscience stationary luxury… I won.

  Take that, Mallory.

  I was a vampire.

Vampires were unreally, fantastically, chimerically real.

  I really was one.

  I really had won.

And Mallory was right, after all… Life really was death at thirty for me.

  How cool was that?

  About the Author

~ one who is perpetually under construction ~

Randi Rogue is an eclectic sort of person. Interests, skills, experiences, and ambitions range from creating to performing, from writing to music to theater to video to digital arts to… The list goes on and on.

Born on Long Island, New York, but raised around the beaches in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, she learned to abhor humidity, heat, and especially the sun—which may have contributed to her fascination with vampires. She graduated with honors with degrees in Mass Communications and English (Creative Writing) with additional studies in theater and film. While there, she was honored at the Florida Suncoast Writers’ Conference in both short fiction and poetry. She married her high school sweetheart, aka her Decadent Husband, shortly after college. She’s worked in fast food, in retail, in rental, in child care, in film, video and television, and was even a special events planner for a city municipality. After convincing her Decadent Husband to take on the adventure of a New York City life, she took on the “day job” as a freelance teleprompter operator, during which, she began releasing her ebooks. She continues in this occupation as she progresses with the Blood Kin Vampires series as well as other stories, soon to come.
