Broken Rules Page 22

by Jade Buchanan

Neil waited until Jonah was behind the wheel before continuing. "She's not sure if it's a good idea or not so she's holding back judgment. Mom did say that Dad thinks it's great since I'm going to be out here anyway. If he moved south he wouldn't have any of the family present since all the boys still live up north. But, I guess we'll wait and see."

"Hmm." Jonah sat in place and sipped his coffee. He held off on starting the Jeep just yet.

"Rich is going to be okay, too. Mom said he's the talk of the town right now but they'll eventually move on to gossiping about someone else."

"Damned fool." Jonah was so pissed off he could barely see straight. Rich had apparently gotten piss ass drunk the other day and walked out in front of traffc. A broken leg and a concussion were all that happened, but he could have killed himself.

"Oh, and Mom wants us to come back for Christmas."

Jonah turned to stare at Neil. "Really?"

"Yeah. I told you, you're one of us now. She's just dying to get her hands on you. Be warned, you may want to hide or she'll end up cornering you to ask when you'll make an honest man out of me."

Jonah smiled shyly. He was actually looking forward to making an honest man out of Neil. They'd talked about it a few times over the past months, but both were in no rush. It was a good thing they could get married whenever they wanted.

"I still can't believe how lucky I am."

Neil turned sideways in the seat to look at Jonah. "How so?"

"I mean, think about it. I went home for my mom's funeral and met the love of my life. Or re-met."

"I know. I hate saying it, and don't take this the wrong way, but maybe it was fate that your mom passed when she did."

Jonah reached over the console to grab Neil's hand and squeeze it gently. "I know what you mean."

He wondered if she was looking down on him and whether she was happy or sad. He hoped she was happy, and that was what he was going to believe regardless. He was healing, slowly and surely, thanks to Neil's loving support. It would take time before all the rough feelings were smoothed out, but with his best friend and lover beside him, he had all the time in the world.
