I blinked rapidly, my body growing tense. For the very first time, I realized that he probably wanted to feed on me. Why had it never occurred to me before?
I was basically food for him.
I pushed that particular thought away as I prepared to tell him what I’d come here to say. It shouldn’t have been this hard, but it was.
“I think this is our last meeting.” I forced the words out and waited anxiously for him to reply.
“Have you found your mate, then? You’re of age, so I assume you’ve been looking.”
If you mean, am I being forced, then yes.
I shook my head. “No, but . . . this friendship is doomed, Will. You’re a vampire, and I’m a werewolf. Nothing good can come from this.”
A crease appeared between his brows, but it vanished quickly as it appeared. “I don’t agree with you. Our friendship will be a problem for others because they can’t see past the stigma placed on vampires. Yes, a lot of my kind are savages, but not all of them are.” He tilted his head to the side. “If anyone has an issue with our friendship, I think that’s their problem, not ours. Don’t you think?”
I smiled. “If only things worked as easily as you make it sound. Do you make it a habit of becoming friends with your food?”
“Yes.” He inhaled deeply, and this time when he frowned, the crease between his brows remained. “I do actually, but not with my food, but with people worth my attention.” He reached out and pinched my chin. At that moment, my heart threatened to stop beating. “Maybe in another time, we’d . . .”
His words trailed off, and my heart skipped a beat as his hand fell away from my chin. What had he been about to say? The silence stretched out between us before he looked away.
“I wish I could tell what you’re thinking sometimes,” I muttered.
He smiled and shook his head, sending raindrops flying from his hair. "Trust me, Elinor. You would not like to know what’s going on inside my mind.”
“I think I would.” I reached out and poked his chest. “Do you think your thoughts might scare me?”
He glanced down at his chest before looking up at me with a wicked grin. My stomach clenched as he sat up straight. "I'm certain of it. There are many things in this world that are capable of making you shiver and shake. And many of those things I've done."
My brow arched with curiosity. “Tell me one thought you think might scare me.” I leaned forward and whispered, “Try me.”
It happened so quickly, I didn’t have time to react. The mischievous look on his face faded as his blue eyes turned red and all I could do was lean away. Then he grabbed my face, and my breath lodged in my throat as he pressed his lips to mine.
I froze as his lips claimed mine, and I was pleasantly surprised at how warm they felt. My eyes soon fluttered closed as his hand still holding my face tightened just a little, and a moan rumbled in my throat. Goosebumps sprouted over my flesh as his hand slid around to my neck, holding me in place.
My lips parted the moment his tongue swiped against them. It was as if an explosion was going off inside me as his tongue began to explore my mouth. His other hand gripped my waist, and I found myself leaning into him as our kiss deepened. I’d wanted this. I’d wanted to feel him and taste him so badly.
Why, though? Why do I want him like this?
I pushed my fingers in his wet hair, and my heart lodged in my throat as he began to lower me onto the grass. My body felt weak and completely at his disposal as he towered over me. I wasn’t thinking about how wrong this was, that I was a werewolf and he was a vampire. All I could focus on was the incredible way he made me feel.
His red eyes didn’t scare me anymore as they darted back and forth over my face. He ran a knuckle down my cheek to my throat, and my body shuddered from the feeling of his skin on mine. His fangs appeared, the tips peeking out from his slightly parted lips, as he used his thumb to trace my mouth.
“Sweet Elinor,” he whispered against my lips before kissing me gently. His cheek brushed against mine as the hand that was still holding my neck moved my head to the side, leaving my throat bare for him. “Are you scared?”
I closed my eyes tightly as I felt his fangs touch my skin. “No . . .” My reply was breathy, my voice almost unrecognizable to me. “I-I’m not afraid.”
He leaned up to stare down at me once more. “It’s not wise to give a vampire access to your neck like this, Elinor.”
“Well, it’s you. You won’t bite without permission, right?” I asked as I reached up to touch his face, but he pulled away.
Using his heightened speed, he quickly snatched my hand and kissed the tip of my middle finger. “No. I’d never hurt you,” he said, his jaws clenched. “But I do want to taste you. I’ve wanted to taste you from the moment we met. But I can’t.” He released my hand. “I doubt I’d be able to stop.”
I knew I should be afraid, very afraid. After all, he’d just told me he wanted to feed on me. But all I could think about was the way his words glided from his lips. He lowered his head to my throat, and a whimper escaped me as he kissed my flesh gently.
“You’ve never been touched before, have you?”
My cheeks began to warm, and I looked away with embarrassment. “Do you have to say that?”
He chuckled. “Tell me you want me to.”
My eyes found his quickly. My heart was hammering against my chest as I thought of the reason I’d come here. I’d planned to tell him goodbye. I didn’t come for this. I was about to be married—I shouldn’t be doing this!
“I have no intention of making this our last meeting, Elinor. I hope you know that.” He released the back of my neck, and I exhaled as his hand made its way down my side to grip my thigh. “All you have to say is please.”
Shaking my head, I tried to snap out of the daze I was in. “I can’t. You know nothing can ever happen between us.”
He lowered his face to mine as if to kiss me when suddenly, I heard a thundering voice yell out from behind us.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
I snapped out of the stupor I was in as Connor’s angry voice pierced the silence. I jumped up quickly and found Will already on his feet.
I took a step forward, ready to explain myself, even though I had no clue how I’d make Connor understand why I was giving myself to a vampire. Realization of what had almost just happened hit me, and I placed my hand over my neck.
But there was no time to think about that, because Connor started to shift. The fury in his eyes was terrifying, and it became even worse when Will took my elbow.
“Get away from her!” Connor yelled as he fell onto his hands and knees, his wolf breaking free to howl loudly.
My blood ran cold as the warning echoed through the forest. I knew within minutes, we’d be surrounded by more wolves. There would be nowhere for Will to run.
Goddess, what have I done?
