“Go on.” The captain waved him off.

With a large grin, Navi turned back to Rem, and then the two of them were racing down the hall.

Her heart swelled at the sight. After Lanny’s death, she wasn’t sure Rem would ever recover. Finally, he’d found something to excite him again.

“Thank you, Captain.” Selene held out a hand.

Captain Shard took it and shook her hand firmly. “It’s my pleasure, Selene.”

Later that night, Selene sat with her crew in a recreation room that’s only purpose seemed to be to stare out into space. The wall had three large windows that went almost floor to ceiling. Beyond the industrial plastic, stars flew by, streaking like lines in hyperspace.

Rem leaned against the windows, his eyes wide and his gaze riveted to the passing stars. He’d been beyond fascinated since they arrived. With his mouth hanging open, she was pretty sure he’d be catching flies if there were any aboard.

Selene sighed as she leaned back against Rikkard’s chest. He sat behind her, his arms around her waist. Though she wanted to be excited about the coming days, the sense of melancholy she’d been left with ever since she saw Earth destroyed, still plagued her.

Even as she watched the stars go by, she couldn’t force herself to be happy, or look forward to their future. All she could think about was avenging Earth and its people.

Selene shifted restlessly, and finally stood. After lying in bed for days, she found it hard to stay sitting for long. She walked over to the window, joining Rem in peering out at the universe. The streaks of stars, in shades of white and blue, were beautiful. She wished Sarah was there to see it, to share this with the rest of the crew.

Her best friend had always talked about returning to space one day. Though Sarah had been born on Earth, her head was always firmly in the clouds—or space, rather.

Selene leaned her forehead on the cold plastic. When she exhaled, her breath fogged the window around her face.

  “You okay?” Rikkard asked.

She startled, jumping a little as Rikkard once again wrapped his arms around her waist. Once her heart stopped galloping, she nodded. “I’m fine, just thinking.”

Rikkard hummed something softly, but didn’t invade her thinking time. He knew she’d say something when she arrived at a conclusion.

Selene leaned against his warm body and closed her eyes. She pictured Sarah in her mind: pale white skin, silver tattoos and vibrant purple hair. She smiled softly at the image of the beautiful woman in her head.

Sarah hadn’t been the only one who dreamed of space. As much as Selene didn’t want to admit it, Earth’s destruction was giving her an out—a reason to go beyond what she had always expected her life would be.

Instead of constantly saving animals, and getting into tough situations, they were in fucking space. Though part of her had always dreamed of it, she never really thought it would happen. There had been far too many problems on Earth for her to ever really see the universe. But now? All of that had disappeared.

Selene opened her eyes and smiled. “You know, in the few minutes I had between gunfights and ship chases, I always dreamed of exploring space, of learning what’s out there and where I might fit.”

Rikkard chuckled softly. “Then let’s learn about the universe. Once we do, we’ll find our places in it.”

His words warmed every inch of her. Selene pulled his hand up so she could kiss it. He always understood her in ways no one else could. He would be here for her and accept her no matter what—even if she might be a little crazy sometimes. Once she settled his hand back against her hip, she felt the calm she’d been waiting for. Certainty spread through her. She knew now that they were on the right course.

A toothy grin pulled at her lips until she couldn’t hide it any longer. “Let’s do this.”
