Unexpected Arrivals

He began to move slowly while kissing me, touching everything that he could. I clung to him, memorizing the feel of his body as I ran my hands along his back, over his buttocks, and back up along his sides.

He went back to his knees after a few moments of the slow movement, and then hiked one of my legs over his arm, bringing us in closer contact as he reached between us and rubbed on my sensitive bundle of nerves. I moaned, tossing my head side to side as the feeling built again.

“Touch yourself,” he commanded as he lifted my other leg and put his arm under it to hold it up. I did as he asked, running my fingers over the slick skin as he pushed in deeper, harder.

“Jesus, you are so fucking hot.” He groaned as he looked down between us. His words only turned up the heat building between us, and I continued to pleasure myself as he pumped in and out. I paused, knowing that I wasn’t going to last much longer when he growled, “Don’t stop, Davina, I want to feel you explode around me.”

I whimpered as I continued, my gaze hazy as I looked at him through slit lids. His gaze jumped from where our bodies were joined to my chest and then my face. He reached up with his hands, bringing my knees further to my chest, and pinched a nipple, making me gasp with pleasure.

“That’s it, baby, that’s it.” His hips moved faster, harder, and sounds came from my throat that I didn’t know were possible as I began to ride the wave of ecstasy. He lowered my knees slightly, grinding his pelvis against me, then pulling out quickly. He pushed my hand out of the way, covering me with his hot mouth and flicking his tongue until I once again lost control, thrashing under him as I hit the crest and fell over.

I hadn’t even come back down before he was back on his knees and entering me again. The orgasm still rolling through me as he began to build me back up with his thumb. My body jerked as he carried me higher. My hands fisted the sheets beside me, and my chest arched up, my head pushing down into the pillow.

“Come with me, Davina, now.” He hissed, and my body reacted to his demand as I felt his body tense and jerk within mine.

His name fell from my lips, and I saw stars around me just as lightning cracked above our heads and thunder immediately exploded. My eyes flew open, and he stared at the charm on my chest before locking his gaze with mine. I reached for his face, and he lowered himself to me, still rolling his hips forward as our mouths once again touched.

We slowly stopped moving our bodies and released each other’s mouths as we paused to calm. Both of us were breathing heavy, and it took a moment for that to return to normal. Once we had, Trevor rolled his weight to the side, removing himself from my body. He pulled me toward him, so we were facing each other.

“Can I just say that was almost extreme.”

“Are you talking about the sex or the lightning?”

He smirked, and his gaze dropped to the necklace between us. “Kind of fitting that you are wearing a lightning bolt.”

I chuckled. “It’s Carol’s. I bought it for her. She loved thunderstorms, always wanted to sit back and watch them roll in and over.”

He smiled, but it was kind of sad. “Yeah, that I did know about her.”

  “You did?”

He nodded. “She told me that on our weekend. There was a storm, and she made me sit by the window and watch it.”

“Hmm,” I murmured as I began to grow sleepy in the aftermath of pleasure.

He cupped my cheek, a frown line between his eyes. “Do you think it’s odd that the day we met, it was storming, and that tonight we have a major storm?”

My eyes popped open. “No. I’m surprised that you remembered it was storming the day we met.”

He chuckled huskily. “That is a day I will never forget, Davina.”

  “Why?”

He touched my face, running a finger along my jawline, around my cheek, and over my nose before he locked eyes with me. “Because it’s the day that Devon came into my life.”

I smiled. “I’m glad that we found you.”

He cupped my cheek. “I am too, Davina. Because it’s not just Devon who came into my life, but you too. I’ll never forget that day.”

I blinked, not sure what to say.

“You seem surprised that I would say that.”

  “Maybe I am,” I answered.

  “Why?”

I found myself frowning. “Trevor, can I ask you a serious question?”

  “Yes.”

  “Why are we here?”

“Why are we here? Um, I thought it was so we could have sex.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yes, of course, for sex. I mean, why are we really here? Is this all it’s going to be, a weekend of romance? Did you just get caught up in the moment with the wedding and all? On Monday, will you be on to something else?”

He pulled my face closer to his. “You are so much more than a weekend of romance, Davina. You’re a lifetime.”

  Chapter Twenty-Five

  Trevor

She stared at me, her eyes flicking back and forth between mine, her lips parted in surprise. “What are you saying?”

What was I saying? Was I trying to admit to her that I was falling in love with her? That while we’d made love, she’d cracked open that last part of me that no one had ever had access to and now it lay wide open for her? Was I ready to even admit that to myself?

“I’m saying that this is more than a weekend, Davina.” Okay, I could admit that much, because I did mean that.

  “It is?”

“Yeah, it is. Is that too hard to believe?”

  She frowned. “Maybe.”

I laughed softly. “Why do you say that?”

She gave me a droll look. “Because you yourself admitted that you don’t get involved with people. That you go on a few dates, spend a weekend with them, and then move on.”

  “Yes, I did say that.”

“What has changed? You’re still going to be traveling, so why would you suddenly want to be involved with someone?”

I sighed. “I have Devon now, Davina. Things are different.”

She popped up on her elbow. “Do you want to be with me so I can move into your house and take care of your son? Is that what this is?”

For a moment, I didn’t move. I was surprised that she would think so low of me. When I didn’t reply right away, she quickly twirled to the side of the bed and stood. I tried to grab her, but she was too far away. “Davina, that’s not what this is about.”

She glared back at me. “Oh, really? Do you want to know what I think? I think that you wanted to woo me into your bed and then try to get me to move into your house so that I could watch Devon. Then while I was living in the in-law suite, you’d tell me that things wouldn’t work out with us, and you’d go back to your old ways.”

  “Davina—”

She held her hand up. “Then I’d be there taking care of my best friend’s child, while you ran around having your romantic weekends.”

I pursed my lips, frustrated with how quickly this all went to shit after one of the best nights of my life. “That is not even close.”

“Bullshit!” she hissed toward me and spun, disappearing into the bathroom.

I flopped back down on the bed. Jesus, I was trying to tell the woman that I wanted a future with her. I didn’t want to go back to my old ways. My life was different, and I wanted Devon and her in my life. Did I want to stop traveling? No, but that didn’t mean that for the first time in my life, I didn’t want someone home waiting for me to arrive.

I found a tissue on the side of the bed and discarded the condom before pulling on my boxers. The longer I waited, the more antsy I became. I was tempted to barge into the bathroom, but I didn’t think that would go over very well. Instead, I began to collect my clothing, laying the items in a pile on the bed.

I had just retrieved my last item when the bathroom door opened, and she stood there in a robe. Her hair was not quite its typical mess, but still on the wild side after our time in bed.

  “Good, you’re
getting dressed. I think you should go,” she said as she crossed her arms over her chest.

I walked toward her, noticing the necklace was no longer around her neck. “Davina, come on. I think we need to talk.”

“No, I think we are done. I’d like you to leave.”

I tried to reach for her, but she backstepped. “No, please leave, Trevor.”

I swiped my hands over my face, trying to think of something to say, but then suddenly, I wondered why I was even trying. Obviously, she thought so little of me that she wasn’t willing to hear me out or trust that my feelings for her were real.

“Fine, you want me to go. I’ll go.” I huffed as I turned around and shoved my legs into my pants, quickly fastening them before I grabbed the t-shirt and yanked it over my head. I pushed my arms through the sleeves of the tux shirt and then sat down to put on my socks and shoes. The entire time, she stood there staring at the floor in front of her.

“Davina, this is not how I wanted this night to go.”

She lifted her eyes to me momentarily before they shot off, and she began to blink. Was she trying not to cry?

When she didn’t reply, I collected my jacket and turned to her one last time. “Can we please talk? I don’t want to leave with things like this between us.”

Her gaze zapped to mine, and the voice that came out of her mouth wasn’t one I recognized. “There is nothing between us, Trevor. It was just sex. Thanks for that. I guess I now see why you do it so often, get off and then walk away.” She shrugged like it was no big deal.

“God damn you, Davina,” I snapped back as I took three steps to get right in front of her. “Don’t you dare talk down on what we just shared. That was more than a hookup, more than a one-night stand. You mean something to me.”

“Yeah, I’m sure I do, as a nanny and someone to get your rocks off with once in a while.”

I couldn’t have been hurt worse by her words than if she’d punched me in the balls. I shuffled back slightly, my mouth gaping as I shook my head. “I don’t know where you are getting this shit, but whatever, Davina. I’m glad I know how you feel now.”

Without waiting to see if she would respond, I went into the living room, grabbing Devon’s car seat, and carefully moved him from the bassinet to the seat. He fussed a little but didn’t wake up. I covered him up well, glanced around to make sure I had all his stuff, and then hefted his seat and the diaper bag into my arms. I turned to say something to Davina, but the bedroom door was now closed.

  Perfect, just fucking perfect.

I let myself out and headed home in the worst mood that I had been in for as long as I could remember. My mind was in turmoil as my heart ached in my chest. We were almost home when Devon began to cry.

“I know, I hear you, buddy. This is why you don’t get involved with women, son. They can tear your fucking heart out on a whim.”

Devon cried louder as I pulled up to my apartment, and I got him inside and a bottle ready while he fussed. After changing him, I sank into the glider with him and the bottle and got lost in my thoughts.

Why couldn’t she believe that I had feelings for her? How could she believe that I just wanted to spend the night with her and then I’d walk away, or that I only wanted her around to watch Devon? Yeah, I wanted her around for Devon, but I thought she wanted to be part of his life.

Devon fidgeted in my arms, and I realized I had stopped gliding back and forth. I put my head back, kicked my legs up on the matching ottoman, and let us shift slowly back and forth—the movement calmed us both as he continued to eat.

“Looks like it’s going to be just you and me, buddy.” I touched his cheek as I studied his tiny face. “I promise I’ll be the best daddy that I can.”

Devon slowly finished his bottle after a little coaxing on the last two ounces. After burping him, I laid him down and then took a shower.

I stared at my phone, wondering if I should send her a message, but what did I say? I’m sorry? I’m crazy about you? I think I love you?

I set the phone on the side table, then lay down and closed my eyes, willing myself to sleep like I’d trained myself overseas.

“Alright, well, I think that will work out perfectly, Tonya. Your paperwork looks to be in order, and since you’re available right away, I’d like to offer you the job.”

“That’s wonderful, Mr. Vaughn. I’m thrilled. I’ve been looking for a position like this for a while.”

“Well, we move into the house this weekend, and I still need to get furniture for the in-law suite, but I should have that early next week. In the meantime, you can use my bed, and I’ll sleep on the couch.”

“That would be great. When exactly would you like me to start?”

“Would it be possible to watch Devon at my place next Thursday and Friday during the day? Then you can move in over the weekend, and start full time on Monday? His current sitter isn’t available on Thursday and Friday.”

“Um,” she winced, “actually, Thursday is my last day at my current job, but I could do Friday.”

“Alright, then I’ll find a temporary solution for Thursday.” We spoke for a few more moments, and then I showed Tonya out of the conference room. Jake was standing outside the door, glowering at me.

After Tonya said goodbye, I turned to Jake. “What the fuck are you doing on company time?”

“Locking down my nanny so I can be on company time, you ass.”

He nodded. “She’s pretty hot; you gonna tap that?”

“Oh, fuck no. She’s like twenty-three, and she will be working for me, not warming my bed.”

He shrugged. “Sounds like it could be a win-win situation to me. She is of legal age. I always heard that nannies could be rather wild with their bosses.”

Alice made a gagging noise in her throat, and I laughed.

“No, thanks. I’d rather Tonya focus her attentions on Devon than me. The last thing I need is more problems.”

“Yeah, how is good old Davina? She really did look fine at the wedding.”

“I have no clue. I haven’t spoken to Davina since Saturday night.” The two of us began to walk back toward his office.

“You banged her and then walked away?” he said, surprised. “I thought you’d at least keep her around for a little while. I know your style isn’t to keep them long, but damn, she looked like she’d be good for a couple of weeks at least.”

His comment pissed me off, but just about everything pissed me off these days. “Actually, Davina kicked me out.”

Jake threw his head back and laughed. “Now, I bet that was a first for the almighty Thumper.”

I laughed when I heard my nickname. It wasn’t one that I wanted, but I’d knocked some guy out with one single well-aimed thump overseas about eighteen years ago, and it had stuck. “Not sure it was a first, but well, let’s just say, I’m letting the dust settle a little bit before I try to fix things.”

“Shit, is that even worth it?” He went around his desk, and then quickly lifted his face. “Don’t you go falling in love and asking to be taken off overseas duty. I can’t afford to lose another operative.”

“Nah, don’t worry about that. I have no intention of stopping what I do, whether there is a woman in my life or not.”

“Good to know. Now get the fuck back to work.” He grinned when he said it, and I gave him a half-assed salute before I returned to my desk.

As I sat down, I stared at a picture of Devon that I’d put in a frame. Well, at least I had a nanny; now what was I going to do with him on Thursday afternoon when Lucy couldn’t watch him?

My gaze slipped over my workspace, landing on the laptop and the lightning bolt screensaver that was currently on my screen. I couldn’t fucking get away from the damn things.

  Chapter Twenty-Six

  Davina

I threw myself into work with more enthusiasm than I felt. However, it was the only time that I could get thoughts of Trevor out of my head. Anytime I wasn’t working, I was kicking myself in
the ass for what I had done.

Not just with sleeping with him, but what I had done after. Making love to him had been the singularly most impactful moment of my life, and yet I hadn’t just pushed him away, but I had shoved him so hard and fast that I had no hopes of ever getting him back.

The fact that he had not even sent me one text message since that night confirmed that. I had no one to blame but myself.

At night, when I lay down, I dwelled over what he had said. “You are so much more than a weekend of romance, Davina. You’re a lifetime.” Had I been wrong, had he been telling me that he cared about me, more than he had anyone else? At the time, I thought he meant that he had only wanted that one time together to last a lifetime. As the words echoed through my mind each night, I began to think I’d been wrong.

Yet, if I were wrong, wouldn’t he have reached out to me? Wouldn’t he want to reconcile and try to explain to me what he had meant?

I was flustered as I arrived home from a trip to the office and was halfway up the stairs when Trevor appeared at the top, Devon’s carrier in his hands. He paused, staring down at me in surprise, and I drank him in. God, I missed him. How could I miss him so much?

“Davina,” he murmured as I forced my legs to work again and took the last few steps to the landing.

“Hello, Trevor.” I pulled my gaze away from him to peek into the seat. Devon was awake and met my gaze, a smile coming to his mouth. “Oh, my god, he’s smiling.”

He laughed slightly. “Yeah, he started doing that the other day.”

“Hi, buddy, how are you? Aunt Davina misses you.”

“Only him?” Trevor asked quietly, and I froze for a moment before I finally straightened and looked Trevor in the eye.

“No,” I admitted without meaning to.
